I am pretty much of a newb to the forum but could someone please
explain why so many people have a membership date of
31 Dec 1969? Is it someones birthday of am I completely
missing the boat on this one?

We upgraded the forum a year or two ago and the upgrade script gave that date to the people already registered.

actually, the date could be 1 January 1970, it depends on your time settings w.r.t. GMT.

Just noticed that Paypal has this problem too, I checked an old order (last month) says Shipped December 31st, 1969. Very odd...

That's related to the base time in Unix-based systems which count in seconds from 0:00 on 1-Jan-1970 UTC. So what you're seeing is how a zero gets displayed (with adjustment for the time zone).
