Will LOW temps affect blank CD-R's?

Postby j_c_hallgren on Sun Nov 16, 2003 5:01 am

Will be leaving some blanks up at summer place on Cape Cod during the rest of winter...I can leave them in one place that is set at 50-55F...or at other that is unheated so temps may go below freezing...any ideas of where I should leave them?

I'm guessing yes. However, for a more precise answer, paging cfitz....

i rather think they'll be OK and come to no harm. it's heat that is problematic not cold (well, not extrereme cold. i think in the Antarctic there might be trouble :o :) )

but yeah i'm sure cfitz will have a good answer, or like MediumRare said:

Heat is certainly more hazardous to the health of your optical media than cold, but temperature extremes in general should be avoided if possible. Rapid temperature changes should also be avoided.

Here is the requisite link:

Since you have a choice between constant temperature storage in the 50-55 F range that is right in the heart of recent best-practice recommendations and variable temperature storage that may subject to the discs to potentially harmful sub-freezing temperatures, the choice is clear to me: store your discs at the controlled 50-55 F location.

That was what I suspected...that the higher "low" temp would be better...I brought up my two 50 Fuji TY packs to keep them from being in a un-cooled house in FLA for the summer! But I didn't even burn one disk in over 6 months...after buying a memory stick drive, I have file backup with much less effort!
