You could put both in a desktop computer (you'll need to buy adapters to do this) and use Norton Ghost to copy one to the other. However, you could also transfer all of your data to another computer over a network, swap hard drives, and then transfer your data back after you've gotten Windows and your other programs installed on the new drive. This is how I would do it if I were to replace the hard drive on my laptop.

Ditto to what CDRecorder posted, but would suggest the network route as you didn't state what Operating System your old pc has and what the new one has.
What I mean is if you have win98 on the old one and the new laptop is running XP of some type your 98 image wouldn't work on the newer hardware due to possible unsupported hardware/drivers.

I would back up all your data to a network and then install the programs on the new laptop and then import your data as mentioned above Image
