Help Choosing Config for Bro's Computer

Postby Turkeyscore.com on Sun Nov 16, 2003 8:41 pm

I'll put the names of the lists just in case the links dont work.
Shuttle AMD System $797.98 "Shuttle AMD"
http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishList.a ... &ID=480675

Asus AMD System $742 "Brother's computer, XP Pro, Barton 2500+"
http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishList.a ... &ID=480652

P4 2.6 $814 "Computer for Brother, 2.6, XP Pro. Over budget but worth it"
http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishList.a ... &ID=480634

Any substitute suggestions. I have a budget of $800 no monitor required.
(dont wanna deal with black friday sales, I can never wake up early enough and im not sure if the town where he lives has any stores worth going to, I will only be able to see him during thanksgiving break so there is a time limit.)

I cannot see you wish list as you have to login to view it which I guess is your account.
Your better to list those components so we can get a better idea of what your getting for your dollars, especially the P4 system.
Also what is the main purpose for this rig ?
Gaming,Surfing,Photo + Video editing,etc ?

Why not AMD with ChainTech mobos? Chaintech throws in lot of additional but useful stuff like Remotecon, Multicard reader with their mobos. Also the price is very competitive.
Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love,
And in my soul am free,
Angels alone that soar above
Enjoy such liberty. - Richard Lovelace

You could save more buy going AMD for sure, also I would get rid of the floppy drive as you don't need it and also why the 2nd dvd drive ?

Getting rid of the floppy + dvdRom and going to AMD would save you $$ and have a better video card and hard drive.

Radeon 9600 128mb $108

Epox mobo 8RDA3+ $86

AMD ATHLON XP 2600+ Barton 333MHz FSB PROCESSOR CPU- RETAIL $104

KINGSTON HyperX Series 184-pin 512MB DDR333 (PC2700) $96

Raidmax Model 278WSP(SILVER/SILVER) 10-bay Case w/ 350Watt Power Supply $59

PIONEER DVD-Recordable (Black Bezel) DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R DVD+RW $131

Western Digital 160GB WD1600JB 7200 RPM 8MB Hard Drive OEM $125

Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack SP1a - OEM $139

Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard & Wheel Mouse Optical Value Pack PS2 102keys --OEM $26 + 6 S&H

With this setup you get free shipping on everything except the mouse/kboard.
3 year warranty and larger hard drive.
Better case with more powerful psu.
Faster and more powerful Video Card.
The AMD cpu/mobo/mem will be more than enough for your bro's needs and possible OC abilities for free :D
And saved you $30 to boot :D
Total price $880 including shipping !

He will still need the floppy drive, also, it's only $10, A radeon 9600 is not much better than the fx5200 hardware wise but the fx5200 has better driver support (I have seen way too many people with ATI problems in my favorite game). Also, the FX 5200 that i have selected is a Golden Sample from Gainward, meaning it has a faster processor than others, it's like getting a fx5200 Ultra for the price of an fx5200.
My bro wont be an OCer, but will probably try multitasking and hyperthreading will help there. The power supply I have selected is the same power as that Raidmax and the case looks cooler :P. I like having 2 optical drives, and so would my brother, also would be convienent for making backups of DVDs. As for hard driveage, he can always buy another, they are on sale a lot, (20 gigs should be good for starters.) And im getting ASUS, which is better

Also, he already ordered. :P , Thanks for the suggestions, but, for someone biased towards Intel and Nvidia..... :)

It's a shame you won't be using dual ddr bandwidth, as you won't get the benefit of it from one stick of ram.

Nvidia isn't looking too good in my book regarding DX9 and games that make use of it, Nvidia are having to do some major remaking of their drivers to fix a lot of problems where as ATI are running away with it IMO.

I don't understand having two DVD drives for making DVD backups as you still having to copy the data to the hard drive before you do anything and then compress it and then burn it. Disk to disk copying will only be good for cd's not dvd's.

Just my 0.02 cents :D

I like to think of it as brand loyalty. I'm loyal to Intel as well. :)

Dude.. regarding the 9600Pro vs. the FX5200, it's no contest. Heck, my 2 year old GeForce3 Ti200 kicks that FX's prosterior. Get the 9600Pro for sure. Drivers are very good now.

Drivers for ATI cards have improved over time in terms of stability. I'm not a gamer though. I prefer ATI for their AIW series. I prefer the installation routine of the driver for the nVIDIA based video cards. My last Gainward card is a GF3 Ti500 with 128MB memory, not a Golden Sample.

A game system and a FX 5200 don't match.
For sure get a R9600 (pro) then youre able to play DX9 games
(the fx 5200 isnt dx9 (misses some things) but for sure isnt't fast enough for dx9)

If you do want a nVidia card, get a GF4 Ti-4200 !!
