Any significant difference between Nero 6 and Nero 5?

What I'm wanting to know is if there is really any difference between the latest versions of Nero 5 and Nero 6, specifically in regard to Burning Rom and Nero Express. I have no need for the other utilities, e.g., DVD burning, wave editing, video, etc., etc.

In short, all I ever use is the main burning part of the program and if I am in a masochistic mood, Cover Designer. And, I'm assuming that InCD will work equally well with either 5 or 6.

I'm likely to annoy people by saying so, but in my opinion, no there is not any significant difference between versions 5 and 6 of Burning Rom and Express. At some point 5 will be missing support for newer drives that 6 will include, and 6 does let you burn longer filenames than 5 does. Also, 6 supposedly has a new burning engine. But in my view, from an end users' perspective version 6 of Burning Rom and Express is primarily a minor freshening of the GUI. And for at least the first several releases of 6, 6 had many more bugs (both in the engine and the GUI) than 5. Ahead may finally be straightening this out. Sometime I'll have to try the latest release 6.0.0.28 that just came out a couple of days ago to see if they really have made progress. But since 6 doesn't offer much new, I'm not too motivated to mess with it.

Of course, as you noted, 6 does include some other programs that 5 doesn't have that may make it a worthwhile upgrade for some.

As for InCD, I can't say whether or not it mixing the versions of Nero will cause it grief. So many things cause it grief that it would be hard to tell what is to blame when it fails...

I would have to agree for the most part with cfitz.

Other than the longer file name support; support for copying CD+G cd's; New Templates for Nero Cover Designer; Nero StartSmart interface for beginers; New look Icons, and flow of operations; and as of the latest release of Nero 6.0.0.28, I've seen a significant improvement in the quality of our VCD and SVCD creations with Nero.

I am "on the fence" as to whether or not to upgrade from 5.5 to 6. I agree with cfitz and others that the burning engine hasn't noticeably changed very much. Nero 5.5 worked fine for me. So, I have to decide whether the additional software is worth the upgrade price. The two programs that I would be interested in are the DVD authoring, and data backup.

I have been disappointed with Nero Video Express since, as far as I can tell, it always re-encodes the video files even if they are already “DVD compliant”. I don’t understand why this behavior is desired since it makes the authoring process take significantly longer with the potential for reduced quality.

So, I will have to look at the data backup software to see if it is worth the upgrade price. I am currently using the MS backup software that came with WinXP. It is OK, but does not support writing directly to CD/DVD.

I have tried Nero v6 and I belive it's the same v5 with a face lift. At least this is true for Burning Rom. I cant comment on Express because I don't use it much. For all of you who are planning to pay and upgrade, I would advise to do a v6 demo test first before making a decision.

Same here, I don't see a reason to switch to Nero 6 just yet.
That might change when Recode 2 is released later this month though. If it is as good as DVDShrink at least (it should be since it is supposedly made by the same guy). Till then I'm still burning with 5.5.
I really hope Ahead keeps releasing 5.5 support for newer drives for quite some time in the future. At least untill everyone here is satisfied with Nero 6.

Nero 6 gives me blue screen of death reboots. So im using easy cd dvd creator 6. I got dvd burner so i need the later progs
