Can't find Memorex Gold/Professional 650MB CD-R

Postby smc on Fri Dec 12, 2003 12:12 pm

Does anyone know where Memorex Gold/Professional 74 minute, 650MB CD-Rs can be found?

I would like to get some for a friend who has a very finicky car CD player (he is keeping the vehicle 'original', so won't replace the player). It will not play music burned on any other blanks I have tried, and I can not locate these...

Thank you for helpful advice!

Welcome to CDRLabs!

I haven't seen these CDs for a long time, but have you tried discs made by Taiyo Yuden (such as Fuji discs that are made in Japan)? I've used a very finicky audio CD player that will only play discs burned onto TY CD-Rs.

You might try your local Staples. They used to have either Memorex or Maxell (I can't remember which) "Professional" discs, and might still. Also, if you haven't already tried Verbatim's Digital Vinyl discs, you should. They are a little odd looking and expensive (~$0.90 per disc), but they use the old dark-blue Metal AZO dye that some ornery audio CD players seem to prefer.

I'm pretty sure it's Maxell.

I would NOT recommend Verbatim's Digital Vinyl discs, personally. I had a LOT of trouble with them, not just because of my LiteON drive, but because they were so POORLY balanced. But as long as you write and read them SLOWLY it shouldn't be that bad a problem I suppose.

They are indeed Maxell "CD-R Pro". They're rated for 48x, but burn at 52x on my Lite-On 52x32x52 drive. And yup, they're TY's. The full ID code I have posted under my DD0401 HD-BURN results thread...

Yes, they aren't meant to be high-speed data discs. Burning should be done at 16x or lower, and of course during playback they will only be turning at 1x, maybe 2x.

No no no. 16x for the Verbatim's is *TOO* fast. Trust me. They work ok at 4x, and 8x is alright. Burning at 12x was REALLY bad, and 16x wasn't even possible on my liteON, and not a good idea in my opinion on other drives either.

If I'm correct, Lite-On drives tend not to like MCC disks, so might that be the problem?

The problem did not lie solely in the LiteON burner, but also in others. I'm not the only one to notice these problems either :o

His player is a Pioneer for the 1990 RX-7 convertible (apparently it has different audio from hardtop).

I will try the blanks you suggest.

I have been burning with Plextor at 1x (4X was max I tried).

Thanks folks!

Armed with your info, I found a couple so far that work:

Sony XO
CDQ-74CN

Memorex
74 DA

Of course, these are darn near hen's teeth too, so I will continue the search...

Glad to hear you have met with some success. Thanks for sharing your results, and let us know if you find others as well (particularly if no hen's teeth are involved  ).
