PNY CD-R's

Postby aviationwiz on Sat Dec 27, 2003 8:36 pm

Anyone remember the PNY CD-R's? Best Buy used to carry them, I don't know if other places used to carry them. I liked em' and kept buying more, until I got my LTR-48125W and started to burn them at 40x (rated at 16x) and I tried all sorts of speeds to no avail, I kept getting CD Speed errors, then I just started buying Fuji's.

Anyone remember using these disks, working well, or poorly? The manuf. was Ritek.

I had some PNY discs that were rated for either 32x or 40x...I can't remember which. When burned on my old 48125W, it would go up to 48x. However, no matter what the speed I used, even 8x, I got unreadable blocks on the CD.

Like you, I went to 100% Fuji/TY discs!!

Mine were not Riteks...I think they were CMC...which explains everything!

My Plextor PX-504A drive (actually an NEC1100) burned them perfectly at 16x, though. Gotta love Plextors! :P
Soon to be proud user of Mandrake 10 (again!). SuSE 9 sucks!

I believe PNY is also their own manufacturer... I have had some Memorex discs which I believe were made by PNY. I could be wrong on that one though.

I have some of the PNY/Ritek 16X discs as well, and they are not bad at all. Burned them at 24X in my LG GCE-8240B, GCE-8320B, and GCC-4320B, all with zero errors. Any higher speed than 24X produces errors.

PNY @ Best Buy

The last PNYs I got were the first batch of 12x discs. At the time, My 4x Ricoh burner (7040) could not read them. After flashing the drive to a 7060 (6x), the drive could read and burn them just fine. I contacted PNY about this and they were very receptive to my comments and the info about the discs. They said that theirs were some of the first 12x media and that they knew there would be some drive compatability issues.

Based on that initial impression, I wouldn't be averse to trying another set from them (provided the price was right) - but I haven't seen them on sale in a long time.
