Power supply went out...

Postby thinboy1 on Tue Dec 30, 2003 11:17 pm

My HP laptop power supply just went out. I bought it in December 2002 and the warranty expired about a week before the it went out. I called HP but got no support because of the warranty expired.

My question is how do I transfer my data from the hard drive to another laptop hard drive assuming I am using the same OS and same type of hard drive and without any power powering the first laptop ? :(

I don't know anything about laptops. Could you swap the drive to the working laptop you have, then run Norton Ghost to make a drive image to CD-Rs? Then, with Ghost Explorer, you can recover the files that you need.

You can remove the hard drive from the laptop and get a 2.5" external enclosure. Then connect the drive to another machine and transfer the data. Or if you get another laptop that happens to allow for a second hard drive, just put it in there. :)

Newegg has a bunch starting at about $20. Just search for: 2.5" external

I'm sure you can have your laptop repaired too...

Can you replace a power supply unit?

Postby thinboy1 on Tue Jan 13, 2004 1:44 am

Since I've never seen the insides of a HP laptop, is their a power supply unit inside, which can be replaced, or is there just a battery, which is the cause of the problem and can be replaced?

How much does the typical laptop power supply unit or internal battery cost?
