Root Kits In Alcohol And Daemon Tools

Postby Ian on Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:03 pm

I can't imagine the developers are happy to see Mark's blog post:

An easier approach is to fool game DRM software into thinking its reading data for playing a game from its original CD rather than from an on-disk copy. DRM software uses a number of techniques to try to defeat that trick, but a straightforward one is simply to detect if CD emulation software is present on the system and if so, if the game is being run from an on-disk emulated copy. That’s where rootkits come in. Two of the most popular CD emulation utilities are Alcohol and Daemon Tools and they both use rootkits.

I can't imagine anyone being surprised about this though.... honestly, if people stop thinking of the buzz word, and start thinking about what the software IS DESIGNED TO DO, it's really not that surprising or out of the ordinary.

How much you want to bet there's not NEARLY the knee jerk reaction of "OMGWTFBBQz0R!!!! " from people, and a mass call for boycotting all things to do with either software piece as there was with Sony

Thought this said "Alcohol and Demons." Started out confusing. Once I understood what it was about, became very boring.

Two thumbs down to this thread.

Nah.. because both of these programs helpe people use copies and/or pirate software. Sony on the other hand was charging people for the music and then sticking it to them with the root kits.

Good answer on their part. I like it when he says, if you don't like their software, uninstall it
