SLOT-LOAD DVD-RW/CD-RW drives?

Postby Coyote on Tue Nov 26, 2002 7:33 pm

Pioneer has their slot-load DVDROM drive, which I really like. Very quiet operation, and quick performance. How come Pioneer or any other company doesn't make a slot-load CD-RW or DVD-RW drive?

Because of 8 cm discs (the small ones), possible scratches and finger prints on the recording side of the media.

8cm discs would be no problem, because Pioneer has a mechanism which loads these discs as well. Not currently on their dvd-rom drives, but they have included this option on some of their Car cd-players. Scraches because of slot-load? It doesn't grab the CD from the bottom or top. Pioneer slot-load drives have a chucking mechanism which pulls the discs in by the edges.

The only combo slot load DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive I have seen is in a laptop at Best Buy by vpr Matrix:

Who makes the combo slot load DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive is something I do not have an answer to, possibly Pioneer? Afterall, Pioneer does have DVD-R drives that also records to CD-R/CD-RW media as well.

Slot load drives are nice, I have an older SCSI Pioneer slot load DVD-ROM drive and CD-ROM drive. True it pulls the discs in by the edges, but I have seen "scratched" discs on some occasions.

Doesn't some of the newer Apple/Mac laptops have a slot loading optical drive too?
