My Sony DRU510a doesn't want to work any more

Postby bouree on Fri Feb 18, 2005 6:47 am

Hi,
Been happily using DRU510a along with an HP300c for a year. Started to get issues with bad media!. Tried various brands (Verbatim, Maxell, Memorex, Datawrite, etc. ), still the same problem.

Either drive will burn data or video to DVD+RW disks with no problems at all but now neither drive will recognise DVD-R disks of any brand.

I updated the latest firmware for the Sony, I've uninstalled all DVD writing programs and just have Nero 6 and 1Click Dvd.

System is XP Service Pack 2.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I had extactly the same problem with my DRU-500A about 2 years ago. Response codes indicated mostly media problems (03) but it had a few hardware errors as (04).

I had to RMA the drive and they repaired it for me. Has been working great since.

Have you tried their diags tool? You need to use a CDR or a brand new (never written to) CD-RW for the test. Even though these are ATA drives that return back results codes that are similar to SCSI and I found it pretty helpful is determining mine was a hardware problem.

Hi VideoRoy,

Thanks for your reply. Have just downloaded the diag. tools you mentioned. Thanks for your suggestion, I will run the test today.
