How to force media speed?

Hello,

I just got a LG GCE-8520B, and I flashed it to the latest 1.04 firmware. Nero InfoTool reports Read speed=40x, Write speed=52x. Two questions:

a)How do I push the read speed to 52x? I read about pressing the eject button for 3 seconds or something like that, I'm not sure.

b)Even though Nero infotool says that the write speed is 52x, when I insert 48x media, I can't change it to anything higher. However, I've seen people report that they are using 48x (or even lower speed Kodaks) to burn at 52x. How do I change the maximum speed, to force Nero to burn at higher speeds?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the newbie questions.
Gabriel.

a)Read speed depends on CD-R(W) media, usually pressed CD-R reads the fastest.
b)In Nero go to Recorder>Choose Recorder>Options>uncheck(tick)Exac-Link/Super-Link but this can cause more write errors.

Pressing and holding the eject button for 3 seconds is supposed to enable 52x reading, but I'm not sure when you are supposed to do it. After you have loaded the disc, I presume. Can someone who owns the drive report the exact procedure?

As for writing at higher speeds, I don't think you can override the write-speed control on that drive, so the only way to get higher speeds is to put in media that the drive likes. What media are you using right now?

The setting burninfool was referring to is the buffer underrun protection (see the check-box in the lower left corner):

I'm not sure if disabling buffer underrun protection will also disable the automatic write-speed control. I don't think it does, but even it does, you really don't want to do this. As burninfool said, it can lead to errors. Specifically, it can result in unreadable coasters. So, it is better to try another brand of media if you want to get 52x burns.

Hello folks,

Thanks for your answer, I'm using Princo and Memorex, both 48x. I know they are not the greatest, but heck it's all I can find around here. Anyway, I wonder if the speed limit is not a Nero but an LG thing. There may be other drives that allow you to write faster than the media maximum speed, what do you think?

Thanks!
Gabriel.

That is correct. The limitation is in the drive, not Nero, and there are other drives (e.g. LiteOn and Yamaha) that do allow you to disable the automatic write-speed control, and do so without disabling the buffer underrun protection.
