I purchased a TDK 4800B and a spool of 40x Fuji (TY) blanks a few months ago. As long as I set Nero's maximum burn speed to 40x, I had excellent results with both audio and data CDRs.

Unfortunately, it looks like my luck has run out. Over the past few weeks, I have thrown away about twenty discs because they will not play in my home CD player (Nakamichi MB-10). The discs I burned a few months ago still play fine, so I don't suspect it's a problem with my CD player. I just purchased a spool of 48x TDK (Ritek) blanks, and they are yielding the same results. I also tried Burnatonce, but it did not improve my situation.

It seems like my CD player cannot find the gaps between audio tracks when I jump from song to song. In some cases it will finally play the song, but it usually just hangs. It even happens on the very first track on the disc, on the last few I've burned. Reducing the burn speed improves the situation, but it still takes a few seconds for my CD player to react when I advance tracks. Again, my older CDRs work perfectly.

Has my 4800B already run out of gas? Are there any tools you can recommend to further diagnose the problem? Or, should I start scanning the "Hot Deals" forum for a new burner?

I've had my TDK 4800B for over 6 months now with no problems. I would try upgrading to the newest firmware for your drive and also try using broad range of media brands to see if you can get one of them to work on a constant basis. But try upgrading the firmware first if you haven't done so.

Download the firmware for the Cyclone 48/24/48B, which is the same as your TDK 4800B.

Thanks for the tip, BuddhaTB. I must've missed the latest firmware release. I was running s7s8, and I just flashed to s7s9.

I burned an audio compilation (from WAVs) at 48x, and my CD player can read it just fine! I'll burn a few more this weekend to test it more thoroughly, but so far, so good.
