Hi all,
I've just bought one of these drives, and it's driving me nuts! After finally getting it to work in Nero 5.5.10.20 the drive won't burn faster than 16x, even though i'm using 48x "Ebuyer" brand cd media. The drive only cost £30 and I though I had bought a bargain - more like a headache!
My System:-
1600XP
K7S5A
256 Kingmax DDR
ATI Radeon
Maxtor 60gb ATA133 7200rpm
If any one can help it would be great,

Welcome to CDRLabs, Pirez!
Make sure DMA is enabled. See the FAQ forum here at CDRLabs for info on how to do this.
If this doesn't help, try other media. Sometimes, media can't be burned at its rated speed, and no-name media is especially prone to this problem. Fuji and Imation media is good.

I've checked the settings on the Ide controller and it says DMA enabled if detected, so I think it's enabled. I think it may be the media, i'll try some of the ones mentioned to see if they work. Once again thanks.

BTW, pardon my ignorance, but what speed is your drive? AFAIK, I haven't come across that model before.

It's a 48x16x48 Commonly known as a PBRW4816. The manufacture date is November 2002, I don't think it's a very well supported device. I only bought it because I thought Philips were a reputable brand and the afct that it was £30.

OK, the "Ebuyer" 48x brand CDRs are manufactured by Nan-Ya plastics. Although these are high quality they aren't recognised by a number of writers, I'm guessing the Philips is one of them.
I'd suggest you buy a trial pack of media from SVP or Bigpockets. I would hazard a guess that Ritek media will burn on this drive at the full 48x.
Alternatively you could buy a pack of FWS media from SVP. This is Ritek media and, now that FWS have had their batch problems sorted out, they are good value media. Hope this helps
