Mitsumi 54x32x54...

OK, did I buy a turd here? It seems pretty fast, but slows down to about 48x when burning Verbatim DataLife Plus 48x-rated discs. Hard to tell how good the burn quality is, too. CD-Speed says the drive can't report damaged sectors, my Plextor PX-504A shows all green (100% good), and my Lite-On 166S shows about 4 damaged blocks (but no unreadable).

The drive slows WAY down when ripping scratched/dirty discs too. But seems to do ok....

Oh yeah...one of the other posts on here on this drive mentioned it was load. Mine's not, it's one of the quitest drive I've ever had (I've had/used Lite-On's 48125W, the 40125W, and the new 52x, and the 166S DVD-ROM, plus the Plextor PX-504A). After my experinces with those drives, I'll NEVER buy a Lite-On again). That Plex can read anything now matter what so far. Had a DVD that wouldn't play in anything, ripped and burned it with that, and bingo! Perfect DVD again. Gotta love Plextors...err, NEC's I guess...

Can't wait for the new Plextor 52x drive! Then this Mitsumi is gonna be sitting in my friends computer....Of course, I'll have to nab the 16x DVD-ROM too. Triple Plextors! Now how cool would that be? :)

Yeah, the drive's media requirements are very high. The only discs I've found that will work at 54x are Hitach-Maxell's. Even Verbatim's 52x discs work at only 48x.

I noticed that about the scratched/dirty reading too.

You really think the drive is quiet?

Maxell, huh? Hmm...Ok! Thank you! Now to go find some...

They're very hard to find. The only discs I've found here in the States are the ones sold by Plextor.

Yes, the Hitachi-Maxell discs are hard to find. BurninMan921, keep in mind that most of the discs sold under the Maxell brand name (e.g. those sold at Circuit City) are made by Ritek, not Hitachi-Maxell. It is a strange world we live in...

I've got the Mitsumi 54x32x54 drive and I use Harmony Gold 80min/700MB rated for 52X speed. I've burned at 54X with no problems using this media with Nero.

Are you sure its not really burning at 48x? You can pick 54x for all CD-R media.

What writing times are you getting?

Megatron... kick ass name.. :D

The media I mentioned above is certified for 52X. I'm getting around 3-4 minutes for entire write process.

3-4 Minutes is *NOT* 54x...more like 40x or 32x. I get 2:45 with a true 48x burn. Check out the section under Ahead Software for making Nero show the actual burn speed in realtime...

Ian, how fast is this thing with real 54x media?

Plextor stopped selling media (well, Plextor-branded anyway), so anyone know of a source of those Maxell discs?

Here's a review of the drive if you want to see what the writing speeds should be @ 54x:
