Fuji + Made in Japan = Taiyo Yuden? not necessarily!

OK browsed into the book/stationary/comp stuff store on campus today as i happen to be nearby, and saw FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN ISRAEL Fuji media. alas, theyr'e NOT TAIYO YUDEN, but rather Fujis made in Germany.
more details:
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... 3845#63845

but to the interesting stuff:
they had more Fuji media. this was a 10-pack in strange packaging - 10 singles in plastic envelopes (sleeves), in a plastic box that has the cover open and tilt to stay in a slanted position when opened (kinda like boxes we used to have for 5.25" floppies way back then...)
the media itself is Fuji rated 12x :o . the plastic wrap on the box is written almost exclusively in Japanese! the only English is: CDR, CD-ROM, CD, FUJIFILM, 12x COMPATIBLE and Fuji's URL...
doesn't say on the wrap where they were made, but one the CDs themselves, on the topside, is marked "MADE IN JAPAN/FABRIQUE AU JAPON". but no frosty hub!
however testing them turns out:
ATIP: 97m 26s 40f
Disc Manufacturer: FUJI Photo Film Co., Ltd.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)

WTF?? :o :x :(
from everyone's experience and reading this like 1000 times in the forums, made in Japan Fuji is always TY!
maybe this is old media???
anyone else ever see anything like this?

also got some Nashua media, this was discussed a while ago.
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=9718
turned out to be Prodisc.
good for me, if i need an alternative to Verbatim DLP i know where to get Prodisc :) now i'm only waiting to see if the Samsung Spazmogen bought are Prodisc too (some Samsung used to be Prodisc).

also, i got a single TDK METALLIC 40x.
this turned out to be Ritek.
ATIP: 97m 15s 17f
Disc Manufacturer: Ritek Co.
Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 73f / LBA: 359848)

correct me if i'm wrong, but i seem to recall people (maybe Ian?) saying the 40x Ritek TDK are crap. is this true?

No, I think these discs are usually good. According to the TheWizard's posted test results, they will burn error free at their rated speed in the LiteOn series 5 drives. In the latest LiteOn series 6 drives, they will burn at 52x without errors.

I have some Maxell/Ritek rated at 40x which seems to be basically the same as the TDK/Ritek 40x. It burns very well in a LiteOn LTR-52246S at 52x with low C1 error rates. It is not as good overall as the Fuji/TY discs, but the burning results are entirely satisfactory.

Upon further reflection, I do seem to have a recollection as you do that Ian said that he regretted buying some TKD/Ritek 40x discs. :-?

I believe you have hit on the answer. Fuji used to make their own media. I don't think they do anymore, but I'm not sure about that.

I thought it was Maxell/Ritek that he was less than thrilled with.

Personally, I've had good burns from both TDK and Maxell 40x Ritek media.

I've got one piece of media that came with my Plextor 12x4x32 that has That's CDR printed on it and a bunch of Japanese characters, also says TAIYOYUDEN CO., LTD. Probably some of the old dark blue media, I've never opened it.

That's right, now that you have refreshed my memory, I do recall that. Something was telling me that they might still be making their own media somewhere, but I couldn't get the old brain to dredge that memory from the cobwebs. Thanks. :)

AFAIK, That's is TY's own brand name for video/audio cassettes.
didn't know they have optical media under that brand name...never seen any...

I've seen them Fuji's around as well.
And i thought that they were German-branded.
Even though, they must be pretty good.
I'll try to get a piece when the chance comes.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Fuji was stopping CDR production. I can't remember where I saw it, the brain ain't what it used to be, but it was fairly recently. But the German plant was the only place making them.

That was me. As it turned out, and reported later on in the thread, that my Lite-On 40X was dying. It would write ok, but it couldn't read properly, which made it look like the discs were bad when doing a check with Nero CD Speed after burning. Replaced the burner with a 52X Lite-On, and all was well again, never an error with the TDK discs. But that first comment about the discs never seems to have gone away.
