LTR-40125W & LTR-40125S

My friend and I both have Lite-On 40x12x48 burners. I have a LTR-40125W and he has a LTR-40125S. We were wondering which firmware to use to make the S a P-CAV drive like the W.

Thanks in advance...

Downloading and installing the latest LiteOn Firmware for the LTR-40125S drive will produce P-CAV operation at the fastest burn speed (40x).

You may already know that both of these drives can be overclocked (maximum burn speed increased) to 48x operation by a trick that installs the firmware for the 48x LiteOn burner with the same hardware chipset. If you are interested in this option, you can find details on this at The Big Lite-On FAQ.

If the drives are overclocked to 48x, CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) operation is supported in the latest firmware for the 48x drives. CAV is faster than P-CAV.

Thanks for the reply Inertia...

So at lower burn speeds (ex. 32x, 24x, 20x, etc.) it will still use Z-CLV?

Yes, I'm aware. Never o/c'ed it b/c I'm indifferent about the faster speeds. For starters, my current stock of CDs is only rated at 32 or 24x and 20/24x works for me. I like to maintain decent price/performance and quality/burn speed ratios. Thanks for taking the time to point that out though.:)

You're welcome, glc1. :)

With my LTR-48125SW (formerly a LTR-40125S) as a test bed the drive, uses P-CAV when writing at 32x, and 24x, (no 20x available). These burns start at about 16x, so accordingly a 16x setting produces a CLV burn.

Sorry, you lost me there.:) So with your burner flashed back to it's original state (LTR-40125S), it uses P-CAV at 32x and 24x? How do you verify this?

BTW, my friend just flashed his drive w/ the latest firmware, R40ZS0P, and 20x appears as an available speed under Nero 5.5 and Easy CD/DVD Creator 6, though haven't actually tried buring at 20x yet.

Thanks...

I didn't flash my drive, but left it as a LTR-48125SW. My point was, other that the faster top speed, the operation at lower speeds should be about the same. The P-CAV operation should be the same for your LTR-40125S. I tested it using Nero in simulation mode and observing the actual burn speed. See Displaying actual write speed with Nero ?
