i just bought a 52246S, but i forgot to read the system requirements in the back. the system requirements i don't meet are windows me, xp, or 2000 professional and IBM compatible pentium 3/450 Mhz MMX processor (i have a 400 Mhz celeron with win98). if i install it in my pc will it perform like it should on a system that meets the min requirements or do i have to return it or upgrade my pc?

Don't worry about it, your processor and Win98 will work just fine with the drive. :)

This was covered just recently in Does Having A Bigger Cache Buffer Make A difference?, in which a member reports good results with a 300 Mhz Celeron.

LiteOn's own System Requirements for the LTR-52246S indicate support from Win95/98 and a Pentium 166 with 128 MB RAM. This is more realistic than the system requirements you found on your box.

I think (although this isn't confirmed) that the reason that the system requirements are so high on the box is because faster hard drives are needed than were included with some older machines, and the drive vendors assume that a machine with a faster processor will have a faster drive. BTW, my 48x Benq (sold as KHypermedia) only said that it needed a Pentium 200 with Windows 95.
