Just got one from Bestbuy during my lunch hour today. It is in fact a LTR-52246S manufactured in Jan 2003.

I bought an external Verbatim 52/24/52 drive and it is also a LTR-52246S. Came with the 6S0A firmware.

There were a couple identical open box items next to it so I had a peek in those to be sure that it was a Lite-ON before I bought it.

I've bought several of these drives for my friends and family and they were all Lite-On drives. Windows even identified the drive as a LTR-52246S.

Anyone else wanting to buy the Lite-On... this might change in future, because I've noticed that the resellers like Verbatim and cendyne change the manufacturers mid-way ! Release some with Lite-Ons... word goes around that Verbatim 52x has Lite-On.. and Verbatim/Cendyne do a turn around and start putting some other drives.

just my experience

The Verbatim I just bought at BestBuy is an ASUS 5224A. :( But for $19, who cares? The ASUS is a 2-sheep.

I had the same thing happen with a CenDyne drive; I thought I'd get the LTR-32123S, but I ended up with the AOpen CRW3248. I didn't know about looking for LTR on the box at that point.

I bought a Verbatim back in the middle of Feb. 2003, at Office Max had Verbatim 522452AL 68S1 firmware and label on burner showed it Mfd. Oct.,2002 also had Cendyne name on label but beneath that in smaller print it had Liteon model No. Seems kind of weird but so far the drive works great. By the way it had a $30 rebate that I have not yet received, anyone had any luck on receiving rebates from Verbatim. it has been about 10 weeks since I mailed in rebate documentation.

Just for the record I bought a Verbatim 52x at best buy and it was an Asus. Have had ZERO problems with it so far I'm loving this drive. Replaced my old Lite-on 32x12x40

Welcome to CDRLabs, quentrm250! :D

Cajun, I had a similar thing to what you described happen to me with a CenDyne I bought. It had a CenDyne label on it, but it had a Lite-On label under the CenDyne one.

Mine was in a Verbatim box, I guess Verbatim and Cendyne must be related companies. Anyway so far I am real happy with the LiteOn burner, haven't burned a coaster yet ( a new record for me. LOL) and I even got my $30 rebate a couple of days after I posted the last message. So all's well that ends well.

Cajun: you might find it interesting to read this thread for more information about how Verbatim and CenDyne are related.

Anyhow, I'm glad to hear that you got your rebate and that you are happy with your drive! :D

Yep I've got rebates back from verbatim they take forever, but they usually get them out.
