Thanks for the report Spazmogen. NAN-YA Plastics, huh? I've heard of them before, but never actually saw any of their discs.

umm, not to be overly picky... but I really suggest NOT comparing discs with different burn speeds to each other. Discs perform very differently at different speeds, and media is different enough from disc to disc without adding in more possible deviation from a standard.

I have my own opinions on how non-professionals like us should test media. If you are interested, check out my review site: www.digitaldolphin.netfirms.com

the page has been edited accordingly.

Next up on my list of things to do: make the long overdue 99 minute overburning page changes. I'll include 99 Minute discs for SVCD's & Data discs too.

I've been messing about with 850mb SVCD's and they seem to play fine in my Hitachi stand alone player.

The media looks pretty good ! I have a RW from NanYa that's pretty good (with recent firmware).

You may want to get a newer version of K's Probe- the latest ones include the manufaturer in the info panel. I'm curious if it gets your NanYa's right.

I'm looking forward to your overburning update too.

Congratulations on your own domain, too! :D My family name was gone by the time I was online regularly. :(

Thanks for the heads up. I grabbed KPROBE when it 1st came out. I hadn't bothered to use it until yesterday.

I've updated the site again with the new KPROBE.

These results mirror my findings with Nan-Ya media. Ricoh-based drives seem to hate them though for some reason.

Very good budget media. Their DVD-R discs are not half bad either.

hrm, looks like Optimum CD-Rs have actually improved quite a bit since their 40x media! check out my review on the 40x media for a comparison:

Spaz: Care to do a quick Nero ScanDisc on those discs so I can add them to the Media Compatibility Thread? :)

I appreciate it.

Thanks guys.

I'm slowing down in my old age.

Actually, I've been spending a lot of time getting the room ready for the baby next month.

No one can blame you for that - it is infinitely more important than CD-R. :)

I'm confused. On your web site, Spazmogen, none of the Samsung discs had any C2 errors at all. I noticed that the CD Speed Scandisc showed yellow squares. I thought the yellow squares indicated C2 errors.

RED is a C2 error.

That disc was also in a trash can next to the computer. It had been there for 3 days before I dug it out, dusted it off and did the read test.

Oddly, if I run the CD Quality test, my drive will not go above 10x while reading it. It goes right to 52x for normal cd reading applications, just not this one.

I flashed up to 6S0D recently (under DOS). I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Oh, I see. What does yellow mean?

I guess that would be why it didn't look as perfect in CD Speed as it did in CD Doctor or KProbe.

I doubt that the firmware is the problem. What happens if you do CD quality check with this disc in another drive?

Note PIO mode.

I've tried to force DMA to on, but it reverts to PIO.

It WAS working fine last week. I wonder why XP did this.

I tried a few of the tips from dodecahedron's FAQ about DMA, but it's still buggered up. I may try physically moving the drive to Secondary Master as that spot is currently open.

RED is a C2 error.

Sorry- I think LiteOnGuy is right. ScanDisc doesn't show C1's at all, and I don't think it shows correctable C2's, but that's not known for certain. The yellow ones are C2's. The red squares are unreadable- for a data disc this means uncorrectable C2 errors and so many of this that the ECC code can't fix them. For an audio disc, there normally aren't any unreadable sectors and the hue (increasingly dark "yellow") indicates the degree of damaged sectors (C2s).

I just remembered that the search function now works :D and found this post by Erik Deppe, the CD-Speed author: http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=53062#53062

I stand corrected about the C2.

BTW: I solved the DMA problem.

6S0D forced the drive back to PIO mode.

I reverted back to 6S0C and all is fine again.

I've got a 19 CD Norton Ghost image to burn. I'll test a few discs as I go.

That's scary! :o I've never heard of that happening before.

Strange, but true.

Also strange: I just did a 52x burn with a couple of those Samsung discs, not a yellow mark on any of them. I'm thinking that quality control could be a problem, or it was 6S0D. I'm not sure which yet.
