Mad Dog (Artec) 52x24x52 Drive stuck at 48x Write Speed

When I go to Nero Info Tool it says that the drive writes at 48x, not 52x. That is with and without a disk in the drive. Nero also does not have an option for 52x writing. What do I do?

I think it's probably a media problem, at least as long as the drive's ID string indicates the 52x drive.

Try InfoTool with a pressed CD in the drive, or turn off JustSpeed in Nero to see the 52x write speed.

You could also try rebooting and trying InfoTool before you put any media of any kind in the drive.

The last possibility that I can think of is that your drive has some kind of technology like Sony's Turbo-Boost. I used to have an AOpen (similar to Artec) which had a feature like this (but only for reading; it was a 32x12x48x drive). Try holding down the eject button for a few seconds while the PC is on. I think you will see the light blink when it's enabled, if this feature is in your drive.

I hope this helps! :D

Well I have the same drive, and have not had this issue. Indeed I've found it to be quite a strong writer at 52x with a range of cheap media.

What do other programs say? What firmware release does your drive have? And what speed does it read at?

Firmware: 1.16

The problem fixed itself later last night. Have not done any tests yet.

What disks are you using with it?
What does it like the most?

I'd like to add my conclusion.

Went back to a 48x drive and writes terrible quality. Called up Mad Dog Tech Support and they did not help me at all. They said that because it is a 52x24x52 drive, it should read at 52x, and write at 24x. They do not know much. I took the drive back to Micro Center the other day and had no problem returning it even though the box was cut open. I will be getting the Plextor Premium drive soon.

I highly recomend that you STAY AWAY from Mad Dog products.

I've heard enough bad stuff about their rebates that I haven't even considered Mad Dog products. :(
