HELP!! Samsung SW-252B DOA??

Hope someone can help with this...

I have the SW-252B on secondary IDE Master (DMA enabled, Ultra Mode 2), my old Sony CD-ROM on Secondary IDE Slave. Jumpers are right, cables are right, BIOS is right, no IRQ conflicts (!). XP Home SP1 sees both drives. My Computer shows the Samsung as CD-RW Drive (D:), the Sony as CD Drive (E:). I can even right-click on either and eject them. Sounds pretty good so far, huh? I can use the E drive no problem...but...

When I first booted up after doing the hardware installation, windows saw new hardware (both drives). I put the User's Guide CD into the Samsung, and it launched just fine. I was trying to go through the driver update process, and when I got to the point of telling the Wizzard where to look for the drivers (the Samsung), when I clicked on the + by CD-RW, the + disappeared...then nothing. Nothing expanded. The drive simply stopped working.

Now, when I put any kind of CD whatsoever into the Samsunk, the LED light blinks, the little CD appears over my cursor for awhile, the light stops, the little CD disappears, and nothing. If I right-click and try to "Explore" the Samsung, nothing...not even the "Please Insert a Disc and Try Again". The Sony is fine.

I'm thinking the Laser crapped-out or something awful like that. DOA??

Anyone??

Dear Gn00b,
Hi.Just try uninstalling and reinstalling the drive from Windows device manager. If that doesn't help you,you may take the drive to another computer and make sure that it works fine there.I myself think that it is a software glitch.
See ya later,

Thanks...probably should have mentioned that I had tried the un-install/re-install several times.

Unfortunately, ours is a one-computer household.

But thanks for trying!

Gn00b, try to uninstall the IDE channel the drive is on.

Windows sez DMA (Ultra mode 2) is enabled for the device, but I'll give your suggestion a try anyways.

It has also been suggested that I should unistall both drives (CD-RW and CD-ROM), physically disconnect them, re-boot, make sure they're gone, shut-down, re-connect the CD-RW ONLY (IDE 2 Master) and see if I can get it to work that way...point being that it may have been a mistake to have booted up with basically 2 new IDE devices installed.

May just implement your solution when I uninstall the 2 drives.

Thanks for trying!

Sometimes you may need to clean up ghosts for controllers (IDE, SCSI, USB, FireWire, Parallel Ports) and your burning devices in Device Manager (ghosts appear dimmer than installed devices). Some ghosts can't be seen even if you select "Show hidden devices" in Device Manager; a workaround is given in the MS KB article Q315539:

Tried about everything. Nothing worked.

Samsung-ODD Tech Support (pfft) agrees...the drive is DOA. Googlegear has agreed to RMA...gonna try to see if they'll sub the Lite-On instead.

Thanks everyone for trying.
