Just a warning: the use of 10x Verbatim CD-RWs has been linked to the death of 3 or 4 LiteON 52246S burners, and is currently being looked into as a possible hardware fault.

Read about it here: http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/topic.asp? ... hichpage=1

(the message at the bottom of the screen is the most relevant)

I find it hard to believe that this is with ALL Verbatim 10x RW media. It sounds like this is an isolated case. I use 10x and 24x Verbatim media all the time, with 52246S's and other drives.

if it is indeed the media, then isn't it scary enough that Mitsubishi put out something that can kill your drive in one burn? I'm not sure what the problem really is, but I find the whole thing rather disturbing and worth keeping an eye on.

It could also be another factor here. Something else in the guys computer could be killing it too.

It could also be one or two Verbatim disc giving him the problem. Not to mention, who knows what the guy did to the disc. He/She should go and pick up some more before crapping on the Verbatim name.

The first thing that occurrs to me when I read the linked thread is that the story is a little too good. Considering the number of people using the same media with no problems, "incredable" is the word that comes to mind.

as for the computer having problems, it is possible, but the guy says that the store checked out his computer to see if it was causing the problems.

I agree it is incredable (be true definition of the word) but as a rule I try to believe people's stories until there is some evidence that shows them as being wrong (when facts are concerned).

I see it the other way. I rarely believe stories like this until someone I know (and trust) varifies it. Especially when I and other people have had no problems with Verbatim media.

In my experince, Lite-On's don't need bad discs to die...they die just fine w/o 'em...

It is not the Verbatim discs!

It is Senator Hatch killing your drive when you burn illegally downloaded, copyrighted songs.

Who sees the BIG picture.

My 52x LiteON does struggle with a variety of CDRW incl. that Verbatim 10x.

I believe it's b/c of InCD Mt. Rainier.

My LTR-52246S is fine with the Made in Mexico, 10x rated (note: not the new 12x rated) High Speed Verbatims and is perfect with the 24x discs.

That guy should have tried using MTKFlash to revive the drive before returning it.

As Action Jackson said, it was probably InCD combined with bad discs.

Notice how he didn't bother to try using a cd-r with it, only RW.

Odd.

I believe he did use CD-Rs as well, it's just that CD-RWs killed the drive, not CD-Rs.
