Was in my local Best Buy and happened to look at the Verbatim VBT522452As that were on sale this week. A while ago there was a post here where someone pointed out that you could tell if the drive inside was a Liteon or an Asus by looking at the serial number on the box. It was said that if the serial number was a 12-character, all numbers one thenit was a Liteon, whereas if the number was a 10-character, mixed numbers/letters one it was an Asus. Well, both these styles were on the shelf. But there were also boxes with serial numbers that were like 24-characters long. Anyone know which models these might be? Aopen?

They could be Benq drives. On Verbatim's web site they do have the firmware for that drive but only for Benq.

paps33,

I bought that Verbatim drive at Best Buy. Mine has a LiteOn label on the case.

David,

I've looked at Verbatim's site but haven't seen firmware for the 52x,24x,52x (internal). I would appreciate it if you could post a link.

Thanks,

Here's the link CowboySlim http://www.v-pgi.com/Downloads.htm
It apears on the web page they have a typo. The one posted posted on the verbatim site matches the 52x24x52 drive Benq firmware format k.(x)c where x is the old firmware version.

OK, Thanks, David,

I was looking at the Verbatim site earlier today checking for firmware but couldn't get to that screen. Actually, I see that you have to get an internal ID number. I'll check when I install it.

Actually, I just checked now to see what was available for the 52x24x52x. There are two items in the drop-down list box: a suffix L and a suffix U. There is nothing available for suffix L; however, for suffix U a file ASUS.............. can be downloaded. For this speed drive then, it appears that there are two sources, Asus and LiteOn.

Thanks for the info David. Then that confirms it: Liteon= 12 character serial, Asus= 10 character, (and now) Benq= 24 characters.
