Actually the failing CMC disc is a rather attractive gold color, so it doesn't exactly "look" nasty. I would have to agree that the color change was a big surprise to me as well, and would be very disturbing if I had burned those discs expecting them to have a normal lifespan. The error results confirm the visible degradation. I must say that I have never seen or heard of a disc visibly degrading so quickly under normal circumstances.

I've had some BASF discs that were those colours...but as far as I can remember, they both started as those colours. One a goldy sort of label, and the other more of a silver sort of label. In any case, the burnable surface had no change in colour at all. Perhaps it was just two differnet branding jobs?

The BASF of which you spoke, or the CMC of which I spoke?

I don't know anything about your BASF, but Maxell sells 80-minute discs with a silver colored top and 74-minute discs with a gold colored top. I guess Maxell uses the different colors to distinguish between the two different sizes. Were your BASF different sizes?

Of course, both of the CMC discs in my picture started out silver like the one on the left.

I was talking about my CMC BASF CD-Rs, both were the exacy same, except they were two different ATIPs, but both colours used both ATIPs.

I haven't seen any CMC discs that are quite as good as TY, but I have seen some that are pretty close, such as Imation 32x. On the other hand, I have seen CMCs that were inconsistent quality or that were consistently poor quality.

well they certainly aren't common, that's for sure!

all I'm trying to argue is that CMC is capable of making quality, but for some reason, probably by choice, they don't normally.
