Has any tried the latest firmware patches for the Samsung SM-348B combo drive? Does the T510 patch really give it Rainier support? An earlier patch was rumored to offer support, but apparently did not.

Yes, Mt. Rainier support was added in an earlier version (T506?). I think Samsung was too lazy to update their website. If you look at the description for the T509 firmware it says the same thing.
