I have a bunch of sony 16x cd-r disks. Can I use them on my two burners? One is a Lite-On 48X12X48 and the other is a Lite-On 24X10X24. Do I have to make a special setting in Nero when I burn? like to 16x?

thanks, eric

I have some old 16x Imation discs that burn fine at 48x on my Lite-On LTR-48125W (48x12x48x), but not all discs will work properly that fast.

Lite-On drives have a feature called SMART-BURN that will limit the speed if it thinks the max speed of the drive is too fast for the discs you are using.

I would advise that you try a few discs at different speeds and scan them with KProbe. You can then decide what is the best speed for your discs.

Edit: If you scan the discs with KProbe in your LTR-48125W, scan at 40x. The LTR-48125W has a bug scanning at 48x where it shows excessive C1 and C2 errors at one point in the scan. This doesn't happen at 40x.

I haven't seen *ANY* CMC media (not including CD-RWs of course) that will not burn at 48x... possibly faster as my burner only goes up to 48x

edit: Actually, in hindsight, the credit card sized CD-Rs only burn at 8x.... but for all 12cm and 8cm CD-Rs (that I've seen), they all burn at 48x

I haven't seen any CMC that wouldn't burn at 48x, either. I can actually burn it at 52x on my AOpen, but I sometimes get write errors when I do that.

Well, just because you *can* burn it at 48x, doesn't mean that you *should*

Very true. I burn them at 48x because 16x is too slow and because the recording quality at 48x is very similar to the recording quality at 12x (on my old 12x burners). :o :D

Oops...

I wasn't paying very good attention; SMARTBURN actually limited my 16x Imation discs to 32x.

WOW! That's new to me! I know that The latest LiteON firmwares have some significant changes in speed limitations, but I thought this was mainly in the overburning area... guess I was wrong! Well, I'm happy that LiteON has taken a more pro-active stance on limiting recording speeds for the purpose of preserving quality :D

actually, I wish LiteON would also include a minimum burn speed requirement, so that people wouldn't burn some media at 4x when it doesn't burn properly at 4x.... Maybe people will start getting the hint that slower burning speeds don't mean better burn quality

Yes, having a minimum speed is a good idea, dolphinius_rex.

Did Imation 16x or other old CMC media burn at 48x before? I have the VS0D firmware, if it matters. BTW, I know for sure that I can burn the 16x Imation at 52x just fine on my AOpen CRW5224 (except for the occasional "write error" which caused me a couple of coasters).

I wouldn't be surprised if it burned at 48x on the old VS08 or VS06 firmwares, but I don't know for sure. I remember a lot of things were more relaxed back then... except for with some Ritek gold discs I have. They used to only burn at 32x, but when VS0B came out, they started being burnable at 48x as well :D ....well actually... they didn't work so well at 48x so maybe it wasn't a good thing LOL!
