Does anyone know why my cd-writer warms up after 10 minutes when turn on the computer and does nothing with it (read or write) ?

When i touch cdrw it`s hot, but it`s seems to work fine.

I have a Philips PCRW1208, and it does exactly the same thing. I think that the drive's electronics just create more heat than most drive electronics do. I don't think anything's wrong with your drive. :)

BTW, my Benq 4824P does exactly the same thing.

You mean your writer get warm without use it, is that right ?
Personal, i don`t think the electronics of the drive warms up so much even i don`t use it.
It is strange to me, because the heatsink of the proc is colder than writer.
I don`t know what to say, i think the electronics of the writer is broken-down.

That's right; my PCRW1208 gets warm, even if I don't use it. And yes, my processor heatsinks do stay cooler than the drive. My drive does work.

BTW, your drive still works, right? If it does, why do you think that its broken?

If anyone else reading this has a PCRW1208, please tell us if your drive does this, too. Thanks!

Oh, one other thing that I just remembered; some older writers actually used to need fans because their electronics got so hot; it could be that the PCRW1208 has a new enough chipset that it doesn't need a fan, but it has an old enough chipset that it still gets pretty hot.

Yes, my drive still works.
I never heard before now a writer get hot in that way (without use it), that i think it`s broken.
I`m afraid in a few days the writer will become o toaster.
Should i put a cooler on it ?

I don't know if they make coolers for optical drives, but I certainly can't see how installing one could hurt. It is definitely better for the drive if it is kept cool.
