Personally, I don't put too much faith into PC Active's findings. The whole article is vary vague and they leave too many questions unanswered.

Yeah, I've got some CD-Rs back from the stone-age (8x max

), and all but one still read fine. Then again, the 166S is pretty good at reading just about anything...

Ian, is this the same article mentioned here awhile ago? I remember seeing something along these lines here...

I can imagine the following scenario at a PC Active meeting:

"Anyone got any ideas for a good controversial article?"

"Yes, let's buy some of the lowest quality CD-Rs we can find and make low quality recordings that are not quite unreadable. If we test the discs again about 20 months later, these poor quality recordings have had a chance to degrade further. Then we can accent the negative and write an exposé about the unreliability of CD-R discs. If we can show problems with enough discs and sensationalize the issue, we will get a lot of attention and our reputation and circulation will soar."

I have an old 63min CD-R that was burned a long LONG time ago, and its' quality blows away any of the CD-Rs that I burned back in '96. I didn't burn the 63min CD-R though...I just got it from where I work since it had been sitting around from 10+ years unclaimed. Who knows WHEN it was burned LOL! It was very interesting to see an original 1x Maxell CD-R! if anyone's interested I can post ATIP info and K-Probe scans :wink:

I have an old Memorex (CMC) CD-R that was burned in 2000 (74-min disc, 7:49 of data on it), and it's still perfectly readable. Here are the KProbe results:

C1 Max= 20, Total= 1415, Average= 3.377
C2 Max= 0, Total= 0, Average= 0.000

Not bad for a 3-year-old CD-R which hasn't been treated unusually well!

Heres my oldest cd 4 years old burned with a now dead hp 2x2x6 drive.

Imation CMC burned in 1999 74-min 609MB used
C1 Max = 13, Total = 3184 Average = 1.1 And no C2 errors.
