Dear All,
Hi.I just saw something about Smart Burn released by Lite-On for its drives.I just followed the link and downloaded the file.I DON'T have a Lite-On drive but I have a LG GCE-8240B with firmware 1.08 on it.I thought that SmartBurn uility would not detect the writer,but not only did it detect the writer but also gave me information on the media.
But I think there is a small glitch.Nero CD-DVD Speed and Nero Infotool report information about a CD-RW that I have as Mitsubishi and SmartBurn detects it as Verbatim.I know that Verbatim and Mitsubishi are one and the same,but still how come both software show diff. manufacturers?
There also is one glitch,when there is no media in the drive SmartBurn does not say that there is no media.It say's "No Media" when the drive tray is out.
It gives the information of the media manufacturer as(when there is no media in the drive) Blue:Cyanine.

Pranav, the two programs may have different IDs for the media. For example, I have some Benq media, which is shown to be manufactured by Daxon by SmartBurn, while KProbe shows it to be made by Acer. They are the same company.
BTW, where did you get those Verbatim discs you mentioned from?

thanks for the fast reply.I don know that Verbatim and Mitsubishi are one and the same,but I didnt know that there are 2 different ID's in the ATIP.By the way a CD-RW detected as unknown by Nero Infotool is detected as Moser Baer India by Smart Burn.
About the high speed CD-RW(Verbatim) I got it with my writer and the other high speed discs are available here in Solapur for Rs.60/-,viz.,are Samsung,Sony(made by Acer according to Nero Infotool).I dont directly get CD-RW's from Mitsubishi/Verbatim here in Solapur,though I would be glad if they are made available here by some computer dealer.

Yes, this is no surprise as the LG GCE-8240B uses a Mediatek chipset, just like most Lite-On drives. Therefore, it has no problem running Mediatek-specific software.

Hi.You are totally wrong when you say that the GCE-8240B is a MediaTek chipset based drive.I have opened the drive myself and seen that the drive is based on a chipset from Oak Technology.The 8160B and 8320B and all the drives after that are based on MediaTek chipset.
That was the reason that I posted this thread.I didnt think that SmartBurn would detect a drive based on Oak chipset.

SmartBurn is actually a technology built into the drive itself. Drives with this feature look at the media inserted and then choose an appropriate speed to allow. If the drive doesn't have smartburn, then the SmartBurn Utility probably just reports whatever speed the drive reports much Like Nero InfoTool does.

My mistake. I own a GCE-8240B and GCE-8320B, and I always confuse which one has an Oak chip and which one has a Mediatek. And I wouldn't dare to open either drive in fear that I would mess something up!
