I have two plextor drives on this machine - an old 4x SCSI burner and a 24x IDE burner.

Is there any tool that'll let me check the quality of my burns/media with the drive (C1/C2 errors)?

From what I've been reading, only lite-on drives support this sort of testing.. Is that really so?

Well, you won't be able to check for C1 errors, but you can check for C2 errors with Nero CDSpeed, which is free.

Edit: Your drive has to support checking for C2 errors, but I'd be very surprised if your Plextor 24x doesn't. You can find out with Nero InfoTool, which is also free.

Isn't there a program included in PlexTools to scan C1 errors? What's it called? Q-Check or something?

Yes, I think you're right. For some reason, I thought that Q-check only works with the Premium. If that is incorrect, please correct me!

For all I know, it may only work with the Premium. Perhaps someone who owns an older Plexy can chime in and help us out?

Q-check C1/C2/CU testing only works with the Premium.

So, with neither of my plextor cdrs I can do ANYTHING to test c2 errors?

This is so weird.. I feel pretty disappointed, I really wanted to test the quality of the burns i've been doing...... Especially because some cds are failing on my earlier than I had expected.

What kind of discs are you using, meu amigo?

I have cdrs for such a long time (I've owned 2x burners in the past), so I've used just about all kinds of media

This 24x plextor is pretty picky when it comes to media.. I always had a very weird issue with it, where data cds done on it many times wouldn't be perfectly readable, and I've always used brands that should be "decent", like sony, tdk and maxell. This was a huge problem to me, cause backing up was a nightmare, since I had to test every burn individually and redo them quite often.

So I got these "new" Samsumg 48x blanks and they run absolutely flawless, I've burnt like 80 cds without a single glitch. I'd just love to do these tests on the different kinds of media I have burnt in here to help me decide about future purchases and reliability of some of the data I have burnt...

Did you check with InfoTool if your drive could report C2 errors, like I asked above? I'd be really surprised if your 24x drive can't report C2 errors.

Anyway, if your drive can report C2 errors, CDSpeed will allow you to check for them. See my post above for links to InfoTool and CDSpeed.

Sorry CDRecorder, I somehow managed to miss your earlier post.

I used infotool and it said my burner can read C2 errors. I then ran cd speed on some of my burns and most of them got 0 C2 errors, just a really old burn that was kind of unreadable got a lot of them.

Is there any way I could test for C1 errors?

Also, a couple months ago my windows xp started lagging bigtime whenever I use my cdr (for either burning or writing). That is pretty unusual, since I have a P4 2.4B on an Asus P4PE motherboard with 1 gb of RAM, specially considering it didn't happen before. Does anyone please know what could be causing this?

Do you have DMA enabled?

Yeah, that's the first thing I went to check. It's in ultra dma mode, as it's always been.

I guess it's some application I installed.. Well, gonna have to format when the new dvd-r I'm buying gets here anyway
