What's the best way to analyze problem w/ TEAC W516EB?

All of a sudden I can't burn CD's with my TEAC W516EB drive after very little use in 2 years. I have Nero 5.5.2.4 installed, running under W2K.

It keeps complaining of read errors during verification and asks for me to insert a different disk. No matter what I put in (including the unused CD-R that TEAC included with the unit) it's not happy, and I keep getting the same message.

Any ideas?

It would be a good idea to scan your discs for C2 errors if your drive supports it. You can find out if your drive supports C2 error checking with Nero InfoTool. You can scan for C2 errors with Nero CDSpeed. Both programs are free.

If you find any C2 errors on your discs, your drive may not be working right, or you may be using poor quality discs.

Also, you might want to try try CDCheck to verify your discs.

This ain't my day ...

The Nero InfoTool file hwinfo opens and disappears in a flash. InfoTool itself creates errors, shuts down and announces it's creating an error log (whose whereabouts are a mystery to me).

Maybe you should try InfoTool version 1.03; if you PM me your e-mail address, I'll send it to you.

Additional info: I'm certainly not pushing the blank discs' limitations. These recent failures have come as I've been burning CD-R's and CD-RW's at 8X, even though they're certified from 12X to 16X. What's the shelf life of these things? The ones I've been using may be from 24 up to 30 months old.

Also, my CD unit plays prerecorded commercial CD music just fine.

Well, the age of the CD-R (and maybe the CD-RW) discs might be a problem. I'd suggest that you try scanning some of the discs that cause problems with CDSpeed, and if they are showing C2 errors, you should probably buy some new discs.

P.S. I sent you Nero InfoTool 1.03.2; check your e-mail! :D

According to a list on the Feurio! website, my Teac CD-516EB can NOT handle C2 errors. Is that relevant?

http://www.feurio.com/English/cd_roms/f ... t_ide.html

Does this matter anyway? I'm currently trying to burn program data (nnnn.exe). Is it necessary to get different CD blanks for data that's not music? Not long ago I successfully burned a large OSX update patch in ISO format downloaded from Apple for my son who's laboring with a phone connection to the Internet. It worked just fine on his Mac.

You don't need to buy special discs for CD Audio when you are burning with a CD-RW drive that is attached to your computer. You can use standard CD-Rs for everything, and they are cheaper, too! :D

If you are using CD Audio discs for your data, I'd recommend that you try some standard CD-Rs. While CD Audio discs should theoretically work for data, I have a CD Audio disc with data on it, and it doesn't work right in all drives. The recording quality is fine, but some drives just don't recognize it.

I don't own any CD Audio blank discs, never have used 'em.

What I do have is 100 PNY Technologies CD-R, 1-16X compatible, 700 MB/80 minute blank discs. On the box it says "Data, Audio, Video". These discs were purchased at CompUSA exactly 24 months ago.

It would probably be a good idea to try some other discs. If you can find some Fuji discs that are made in Japan (made in Japan is important because the ones made elsewhere aren't as good), that would be my first recommendation. Otherwise, TDK discs would probably be a good choice.

I am going to follow your suggestion. Let me ask some other speculative questions, though.

Do you think it's possible indoor pollutants have coated the laser lens? (tobacco-free home, but I do cook)

Could this problem be caused by a corrupted Teac driver?

What's your guess the % likelihood is for the problem being substandard/degraded/inappropriate blank disks, if all sources (hardware/software/discs/environmental) added up = 100%?

I doubt that indoor pollutants have coated the lens. I still have an LTR-12101B drive from mid-2001 that works fine, and there is cooking in my house, too.

I suppose that the problem could be caused by software. I doubt it's the CD-RW drive driver, but it could be the IDE driver. What chipset does your motherboard have, and do you have the vendor-supplied drivers or the Microsoft drivers installed for the IDE controllers?

Also, the problem could be caused by a faulty IDE cable (which is unlikely if you haven't been upgrading or repairing the computer lately. You might want to try replacing the cable if you have upgraded or repaired the computer recently, and it might be a good idea re-seat both ends of the IDE cable anyway.

Again, it could be the blank discs.

Unfortunately, I really can't provide a percentage possibility to the possible problems. However, the blank discs are the easiest thing to replace if they are causing the problem, so I recommended them first.

Forgot to report back. I bought some fresh 48X Fuji CD-R's made in Japan, but I got exactly the same failure. I doubt it's the CD's causing the problem.

You're right; since the Fuji discs didn't work, it looks unlikely that the discs are causing the problem.

I'd suggest that you update to Nero 5.5.10.54 (free update at www.nero.com).

Also, try going into Windows device manager and uninstalling the IDE controller to which the CD-RW drive is attached. Then, reboot the computer and try burning again.

Nero updating is one thing, but Clone CD and all the backup software I've tried also balks the same way. I'm getting a little nervous because I can't back up my system.

My TEAC CD-RW plugs into a socket on the motherboard, not into an I/O card. I'm pretty sure I slaved my CD-RW to the same IDE channel that my hard drive runs on, for what reason escapes me two years later. But there's no chance to physically uninstall the IDE controller, since it's an onboard AMI chipset. Worse yet, it controls my hard drive!

You don't have to physically uninstall the IDE controller, just go into Device Manager (right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, go to Hardware, click Device Manager). Before you perform these steps, though, shut down the computer and put the CD-RW back where it was on the secondary IDE channel.

When Device Manager is open, right-click on the Secondary IDE Channel and click "Uninstall". Then, reboot the computer, and the secondary channel will be re-installed. If a driver is causing this problem, these steps might help repair the driver.

I finally READ the description of my TEAC CD-RW drive in the W2K Device Manager.

It's listed as "TEAC CD-W516EB SCSI CD-ROM Device"

So W2K thinks my IDE device is a SCSI device? As far as I know, there's no SCSI anything in my system.

That's normal; some IDE drivers report the drives as "SCSI". In my current computer, my IDE hard drive is reported as SCSI because it's on a Promise Ultra133TX2 controller (and I don't have any SCSI peripherals in my computer, either). The same hard drive is reported as IDE when it's on the motherboard's integrated controller. The difference is just the way the drivers for the IDE controller report the drives.

Can someone tell me:

1) Why are there 4 drivers referenced at the bottom of the log?
2) Are any of these drivers known troublemakers for Nero 5.5.2.4?
3) Why do steps #15, 20 and 24 refer to SCSI? The CD-RW drive is IDE.
