Hi guys,
I had been to a local computer store where I saw a spindle of Philips CD-R's.They are rated as 700MB/80 Minutes and are 48X compatible.I bought the pack and popped in the CD in the writer and fired up Nero Infotool.Infotool recognised the disc as "unknown (code 97m15s37f)".
I then fired up SmartBurn 3.1.4 and it gave the results as below,


Drive Type = CD-RW
Disc Type = CDR (B-)
Material = Phthalocyanine
Lead In = 97:15:37
Lead Out = 79:59:74
Nominal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f/LBA:359849)
Manufacturer Maybe = Nan Ya Plastics Corporation
Smart-Burn Speed Limit = Wrt(24X),Rd(16X)


So has anybody heard of the above mentioned manufacturer.One more thing is that I checked the overburn capacity of some 5 discs using Nero CD-DVD Speed and all the CD's had overburn capacity more that 83 minutes(about 732 MB).The maximum I had seen before was a Sony CD-R with about 725MB.
Also can anybody explain me what does that B- stand for in the above data,under Disc Type?

I've heard of Nanya Tech before, but I still don't know much about them. I used one of their CD-RWs before, and it worked very well until it suddenly changed...physically, almost as if the recording surface clouded over with something....it was weird!

Thanks rex for the reply.I was a little surprised to find a disc other than Prodisc,Moser Baer,Sony and sometimes Mitsubishi.I had not heard of this Nanya Plastics Corp. before.I "Googled" and found their site,but nothing on the site points to their CD-R's.

I've heard of them before. I've never used their discs, though. I think they have made some Lite-On and Samsung discs.

Nan-Ya Plastics is a part of privately held Formosa Plastics. Formosa actually makes the plastic at several sites, including near Houston, TX, and Baton Rouge, LA. Nan-Ya has numerous facilities, and forms the plastic into various shapes/items. The facility near Houston Makes large rolls of plastic sheet/film. I saw green rolls used in making artificial Christmas trees. I have never seen a CD-R facility. (Of course that doesn't mean they don't make them elsewhere.)
The parent company is headquartered in Livingston, NJ. Not much info on the CD's, but I thought you may be interested.

I thought Samsung discs were made by Mitsubishi.I dont know a thing about Lite-On's as they are not available here in my city.I have never seen one except for Sony,which is a rebadged Lite-On.

Here is some information that indicates that some Samsung discs (but not all) are made by Nan Ya. I seem to remember that some Lite-On discs were made by Nan-Ya a while back, but I could be wrong.

HERE's a few tests of some NanYa media. The RW tend to be pretty bad, which is not unusual for RW.

LiteON CD-RW discs have been made by Nanya, whereas LiteON CD-R discs have been made by CMC more often then not.

Samsung is almost always made by Ritek, but a few exceptions always occur.

CDRecorder gave a link to a topic where Nan-Ya Samsungs were mentioned.

i've seen (and have) Prodisc made Samsung CDRs.

I have had a question in my mind for a few days.How come Infotool shows some discs as unknown and SmartBurn 1.3.4 shows the manufacturer name for the same without any problems?

For some Nan Ya CD-R results, take a look at the Media Compatibility List. These discs performed quite well in the Artec 52/24/52, Lite-On LTR-52246S, and LTR-52327S.

Hi Pranav. Those Nanya discs are okay, but there are better discs around. These include the MoserBaer India discs, and also the Benq 48X Gold 700 MB. Check them out, pretty cheap too. I picked up a 25 pack of the Benq discs for Rs 295.
Oh, and did you guys know that VIA Technologies (The chipset manufacturers...) are owned by Formosa Plastics?

Interesting, I didn't know that! BTW, I have a VIA chipset on my main computer's motherboard, too.

I have some Nan-Ya plastics CD-R discs which is quite good, their CD-RW discs is not so good.

No much experience with these but I'll put them in the same category as ritek.

Better than prodisc and moser baer india and CMC, but worse than TY and fujifilm(the made in germany ones).

Looking at the the link you gave OC-Freak,I should accept that they are quite good for the price that I got them.

I've just been working with some LifeTec 48x CD-Rs that have a Nanya Tech ATIP code:

And these dscs Suck!

My LiteON 48125W only burns them fine at 8x. When I burn them at 40x on the Plextor Premium, Power Record drops the speed to 32x, and the quality is pretty good (not GREAT though). The weird thing is, when I burn them on the Plextor Premium at 24x, Power record then drops the speed down to 16x! ...but they still burn pretty good.

Perhaps these are just really poor quality Nanya Tech discs... or possibly made by another manufacturer using Nanya's ATIP?? Like I said, they are branded LifeTec 48x CD-Rs, and they come from Europe.
