I am admittedly ignorant about buying media due to the fact that I do so little recording other than creating backups for my system on CD-RWs. But I was running low on CD-R discs and came across what appears to be a deal here: Fuji CD-R Deal. Where I live, such prices are unheard of, so I followed my uninformed instincts and bought 2 packs of 20 each.

Would someone like to placate my fears that I did a dumb thing?

I can't read the photo, are those 16x discs? If so, they should be limited to 24x burning, but will be TY media and very good quality.

Thanks for the input. I can't read the label in any of the images either. I even tried zooming in on one I saved and opened in PSP, but to no avail. The only thing that I can make out is: 80Min 700MB/Mo. I have no idea what the "Mo" designation means.... ??

If they are 16x, that sounds terribly slow. I thought most all CD-Rs were rated at 48x and that only CD-RWs came in different speeds? So, you can see that my ignorance is expansive on this subject!

hopefully made in Japan, good quality... low speed should not bother you, considering the amount of cd-r burns you do.

The 16x TY-made media is deffinitely old, which would explain the low price. It's 2 versions old, to be exact. It was followed by 24x/32x rated media, then the 40x/48x. Burned at 24x in most modern drives, it will perform very well.

I called the E-Bay vendor. Salesman said the CD's come in a brown pack, but say "Made in Japan." I didn't think to ask him about recording speed.

Anybody buying these CD's should buy at least 5 packs of 20, though, to amortize the high shipping charge from Canada - $10 for the first pack plus $2 per pack after the first.

When I called the first time, I too forgot to ask about recording speed. But taking your lead, I called back this morning and asked about the speed of these Fuji CDs. The first man I talked to said he wasn't sure and even opened a pack to check on the label, etc. but he said there was no indication, that he could see, what the speed was. However, he said he would call Fuji personally and find out and call me back.

Within 15 minutes I got a call back and the answer given was, "Up to 48x". I increased my order by 40 more (2 packs).

The shipping costs seem to be high, but I distinctly remember reading about a great deal for TY CD-R 48x discs in this Forum a few months back and ordered a stack of 100 from the company in the U.S. (I'm in Canada). The price for the CDs was great.... but the shipping cost was staggering. They only would ship via UPS, so in addition to their balloon shipping cost, I would have had to pay an additional $25 "Brokerage Fee" to UPS on top of the regular shipping cost. All total, the shipping would have cost me $60+ Canadian. Needless to say, I immediately got on the phone and canceled the order. The salesperson was sympathetic and gladly complied with my cancellation request.

Mo is French for Megaoctets where I'm sure you are smart enough to decifer the Mega part and where octets stands for Byte...

You have discovered what I found out some years ago. FedEx is somewhat better as they did not add a "brokerage fee" but the standard 25$US shipping cost makes one think twice about the "deal"!

Over 10 years ago, I had found a deal on a Panasonic dot matrix printer from some discount warehouse in the N.Y. area. When asked about shipping method. I requested by land. They sent it by plane and had to pay around 125$CA and picked it up myself at the airport to keep costs down. They had charged my credit card and never accepted to correct the shipping fees... I spent hours on the phone to contact the cc company and said they couldn't do anything as it was a foreign purchase. Nowadays, I try to keep my purchases within Canada although, when in the USA, I try to grab the deals at BestBuy/BestBrands etc.
