I'm using Nero 6 for burning music CD's. The fastest speed I've been able to burn at has been 40x. I'm using Maxell CD-R 700Mb recordable media. How can this drive burn at faster speeds. The last CD I burned used around 98% of the buffer. Does the 2MB buffer limit the burning speed?

Nope, your 2MB buffer is fine. Is the problem that 40x is the highest speed Nero is offering to let you burn? If so, the problem is that the drive "thinks" that the writing quality will be too low if you burn faster than 40x on this particular type of disc. You could try updating the firmware to version 6S0F to improve media compatibility. If this doesn't help, the only thing you can do is use a different brand of discs.

You can increase write speed in Nero by going to Recorder and select Options or Advanced and uncheck SMARTBURN,I don't recommend you do it though.

Good point, Burninfool. The reason it is not recommended to uncheck SMART-BURN is because the writing quality may be very poor if you uncheck it, which could cause the disc to become unreliable.

The OP doesn't mention the speed rating of the CDR's, or the ATIP. Any Maxell I've had was Ritek TG and had a SmartBurn limit of 52x, even the 40x Maxell 650MB media.
