Is my burner dead?

I have an Artec 32X burner and I installed Super DVD Ripper for the first time a few nights ago. I finally decided to try using it to make a SVCD from a DVD. Let me just say that I have never had any problems with this burner and I am running WinXP Pro. Well, it started burning the SVCD's, burned the first one fine and when it asked for the next blank media it gave me an error that stated to change to RAW or MCM mode or lower the burning speed (I was at 18X and using Ritek media). Well I tried using MCM and RAW modes I lowered the speed and it would not write the SVCD. I finally gave up and tried playing UT after that. That's when things got bad. The system kept telling me to insert the UT CD when it was in the drive. I checked other data CD's and when I tried to access them via explorer I would get an error: "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function".

Am I up a creek? I did a google search for that error and did find some people with the same error message. It was due to Norton Anti-Virus 2004 or the Intel Application Accelerator. I have niether. The only other changes to my system have been the latest XP updates and vbrun time 6.0.

I tried re-installing windows and that did not work either. It's recognized as a CD-RW only when there's nothing in it; it appears as a regular CD- ROM drive whenever I insert a disc and it is not readable. :(

Welcome to CDRLabs! :D

Have you tried updating to the latest firmware for your drive? Try looking for it here and at Artec's web site.

I have not tried updating the firmware. Is that really necessary if it was working fine?

I really don't know, but it's the only thing I can think of to try. I'm assuming this drive is no longer under warranty. If it is still under warranty, I'd recommend that you RMA it.

No, it is out of warranty. I guess if it is not working I have nothing to loose. I'll try that after I try a clean install of XP. Although I re-installed XP, I did not do clean install. Thanks. I'll post once that has been done.

Oh, OK. I thought you had clean-installed XP. I agree; it is probably better to clean-install XP first.

I hope that helps!

Well, after a clean install and verifying under a win 98 boot diskette the burner does not read anything, so I guess it is fried. Luckily I have a stand bye Phillips drive I popped in and it works fine. Anyone want to recommend a good burner that is not to expensive?

I have been looking at a Lite-On LTR-52327S, is that any good?

Yes, it sounds like your drive is fried. :(

The LTR-52327S is a very good drive. You can get a good price on it at http://www.newegg.com.

The drive is very fast, and it's writing quality is incredibly good, especially with the QS0B firmware! :D

I found it on NewEgg but as an OEM, do you know if that includes software? If not, will my Nero Burn 5.5 that came with my Artec drive work with it?

it's quite possible it will not.
it depends on what kind of Nero you got with your Artec drive.

what does the splash screen show when you do Help->About in Nero ?
does it say Nero 5.5.x.x or Nero 5.5.x.x OEM or something like that?
or was it Nero Express?

I'll have to get back to you on that one. I'll check later today.

I saw the retail version of the 52327S at NewEgg just now.

BTW, I just bought the black OEM 52327S at NewEgg last week, and it came with Nero Express, a small manual, mounting screws, and an analog audio cable.

what about the Plextor PlexWriter PX-W5224TA 52/24/52A CD-RW? I am looking for something that is going to last. I don't care to much about speed, more about longevity.

Hi guys....
Just got a question.....How is the burner detected in the system if it is fried?I think the laser assembly needs some cleaning, after which, most probably it will work.I am not sure, but there was a same problem with my friends CD-ROM,it just did not read any type of CD,luckily was in warranty and got it replaced. The guy at sevice centre said that it has problems with laser assembly.I dont know which type of problems though.
See ya guys later,

I was thinking about that last night. I have not chucked the drive, maybe I'll try to clean it. I have nothing to lose, right? The drive has been out of warranty for only a month! I still want to look at buying some new burner's. I want to make a dedicated CD burning station with maybe 2 or 3 identical drives. I burn a lot of CD-r's, maybe 75-100 at one time on a very regular basis. Before anyone asks, it's nothing illegal. 8). Mainly audio demo's for customers that want to get their music out there. So, having a reliable setup is a concern. That is why I usually have an extra burner on hand.

Made a decision, going with MSI

Well, after reading some reviews I finally decided to get a MSI CR52-M in black. I guess I'll see how it works out. Part of my decision was because it comes with Nero Burn 5.5 and not the express version. It got decent ratings here and just about all the other reveiws I have read. I'll still probably buy the plextor later. My brother's HP burner went out on him so I'll probably send him my Phillips and get the Plextor. I'll compare it to the MSi and then bassed off of that buy another two of whatever brand comes out on top.
