Hi,

I am quite sure that Verbatim Europe announced 32x CD-RW media to be available in October. However, I have still not seen any 32x CD-RW in real life.

When will they become available (in the Netherlands)?

Hi guys,
the max. speed CD-RW available in my town is 10X.I have not yet seen 24X US media anywhere here in Solapur.
By the way,how come the media is 650MB?I thought it would be the "normal" 700 MB media.
See ya guys later,

Actually, I think 650MB is more of the standard than 700MB. :) Not sure if it has anything to do with Orange Book, but if you look at old burners (2X, 4X, 8X, etc.), some of them don't support 700MB CD's, just like some modern burners don't support 800/870MB discs. 700MB has become more of the modern standard for most burners, but before 700MB was mainstream, 650MB ruled the roost. And before 650MB, there was an even smaller standard...something like 300MB. Odd, I know. :P

before the 650MB CD-R was the 63min/580MB CD-R (I actually have one!).

I think for manufacturing purposes the 74min CD-R/CD-RW is easier to produce. But most manufacturers no longer make 74min CD-Rs anymore, even though they are the officual standard! I know Mitsui still makes 74min CD-Rs, but Ritek has stopped. I am 95% sure that CMC no longer makes them either.

The German computer magazine c't has a short test of the Verbatim 32x UltraSpeedplus (700 MiB) in the latest issue (no. 24). Here a summary:
- the media will be available in Jan. 2004
- media is only suitable for burners supporting ultraspeed+. The writing laser must be pulsed at a frequency twice that for normal ultraspeeds.
- test burn with a Plexwriter Premium (firmware 1.05) completed in 3:17 min.
- quality (from AudioDev scan) is OK: BLER is 72 per sec at inside, falling to less than 20. Jitter is high: "3T lands" up to 45ns (allowed 35ns).

According to Verbatim USA, they've been shipping this media for a few months now. I tried pointing out to them that their claims were total BS, since its not for sale anywhere including their own online store. January sounds much more realistic than October. Hopefully they can speed up their 8x DVD+R discs. Going by their current shipping trends, we won't see it until summer.

There is some truth in what's verbatim is saying.
The media is shipping at least is shipping form Singapore to the US.
NExt they also started shipping the real media to drive manufacturers and some magazines and other third parties.
Shipment to stores however seems so far not to be there.

The januari date given by C't is the time verbatim Germany expects to have the media ready fo volume shipement.
However some stores might have small amounts in advanced.
I even have heard some stores are getting some test media in the early december.

DVD+R 8x. Well there shipping 8x DVD+R media from Singapore to other parts of the world. But when we will see it in store is a question.
