Newbie problems with Optorite DD0203. Should be simple.

Hi, I hope you can help. I have recently bought a new Athlon XP2800+ running Win XP (512MB) and it came with the Optorite DD0203 CD/R/DVD/R. The computer is running fine but I've had a few problems with the CD Drive.

Firstly I used the B's recorder GOLD 5 to try to extract some music from an audio CD (non protected). GOLD 5 froze after about 5 minutes and I had to 'End Task'.

Secondly I just used BurnAtOnce to try to rip a whole CD (again, non protected) and it took over 40 minutes to create a disk image, and then that froze too.

So yes, I'm having problems with it. Does anybody know why it would take 40 minutes to read a CD?

As I'm new to XP I have no idea how to alter DMA settings either. The DD0203 driver in Device Manager just says
Provider: Microsoft
date: 01.07.2001
version: 5.1.2535.0

Is that correct?

I have the new Firmware (2.16) for the drive and new versions of BurnAtOnce and Gold 5. I have the ASPI drivers bundled in XP Pro.

Any information would be appreciated.

Maybe I've solved it. I used a demo copy of CDRWin (3.9E) which managed to read the audio extremely quickly (and added new ASPI drivers). It wrote fine too.

Looks like it was just a software issue.

I'll end up buying CDRWin or Nero (as it has DVD capabilities) soon.

P.S. I worked out how to enable DMA too.

for DMA issues, check out the FAQ:

burnatonce is freeware (for personal use), supports DVD-R/W (not +R/W though, at least not officially). good program IMO.

for Audio Extraction, many recommend CDeX. i believe it is freeware too.

if you need ASPI, you can get ForceASPI 1.7 which installs ASPI 4.60 (1021) here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_s ... rcaspi.cfm
(on WinXP, burnatonce uses SPTI and doesn't need ASPI).
