i have just built a new pc
spec:
abit kv7
athlon 2500xp
512 meg ram
maxter 120 gig hdd
52xcd-rw
windows xp

problem is when i do a speed test in nero it says i can only burn at 16x...that's not right is it???i am using mp3s on my hdd and putting them on cd-r so it aint got nothing to do with my cd-rom.

hdd on primary
cd-rw on secondray master
dvd-rw on secondray slave

it was quicker on my old 1 gig computer.
NB:i also installed the via chipset drivers i had with the board
could the board be faulty or am i doing somthing wrong?

The low speed is because this is what speed the media you are using is rated for or is the highest speed the burner will be able to burn at.

What brand of media are you using and the speed it is rated to burn at?

what kind of cd-r's are you using?

i am using datasafe 52x and i have also tryed imation to name but a few, when i was using my old abit bf9 i could do approx 32 speed no problem so i know it is not the media as i have always used the same discs

Are you able to see other speeds under the burn tab in Nero when you look in compilation properties?

yes

If you are able to see other speeds, are you able to select the higher speed and burn a cd?

This can sometimes occur if UDMA is not enabled.

my hdd show that dma mode 5 is enabled,i have a pci voodoo card could that slow it down because it is not agp,could do with knowing other peoples speed test in nero.

I don't think the video card has anything to do with it. Is DMA enabled for your optical drives, too?

i did some playing around tonight,i formated hdd and put "windows me" full install on and did a speed test and WOW it read at 94x fantastic,so i know my computer is fast enough now,so i formated again and slung windows xp on and back to square 1......16 or 24 speed again so it must be somthing to do with windows xp pro,the only thing i can think of is winows me was fat 32 and xp was ntfs....can anyone shed any light on this???

Well, that's good that DMA is enabled. I should have mentioned that the difference between NTFS and FAT32 shouldn't make any difference.

Also, what is the model and firmware version of your CD-RW drive?

so what am i doing wrong then windows me works fine but xp does not so it is nothing to do with hardware.

I don't know if you are doing anything wrong or not.

What model is your CD-RW drive, and what version of the firmware does it have?

Have you loaded any IDE drivers other than the Microsoft ones when you installed Windows XP?

right this morning i formated my hdd then put windows me on and it worked fine fast burning,,,,so i formated hdd againg and put windows xp on and now it is slow burning,i have tryed it with or without ide drivers and it is still the same,is there a special way of installing widows xp ie::just letting it boot from cdrom then installing it or is there a way of installing it through dos.

Well, you could try doing an "upgrade" install of WinXP over your copy of WinMe. That may or may not work well, but it's worth a try.

Also, what CD-RW drive do you have?
