Prices on burners

My samsung burner is slowly going downhill. I'm ready to upgrade and looking for a good burner. The ideal burner would be one that lasts at least 2 years. My old samsung is having problems and it's only been about a year and a half.

It seems that everyone shouts praises on the lite-on burners. So why are the lite-on burners so cheap compared to the Sony or TDK burners which are $60+ at CompUSA?

There was a Memorex 52x24x52 at CompUSA for 29.98 flat (no rebate). I was scared to buy it thinking it was junk if it only cost that.

Does price have anything at all to do with how good the burners are?

well if you want great cd burner, check out plextor premium

the memorex and tdk are re-badged lite-ons anyways

but either way i would go plextor, they are nice burners that hold up very well

So why pay $60 for a re-badged lite-on when you can by it directly from lite-on for a fraction of that price? Am I missing something here? Does Sony or TDK do anything to these burners? Any modifications? Are the optics really the same?

Thanks for the info on plextor

Sony, TDK, and other companies who re-brand Lite-On drives often modify the firmware slightly, but they typically don't make it any better. Other than the firmware and faceplate, the drives are identical.

If you are going to buy the Plextor Premium, you might as well buy a DVD burner!

You may also want to consider the Plextor 52x24x52 CD-RW Drive, Model PX-W5224TA-BPS. $47. at newegg for the oem version. I picked one up to replace a flaky LTR-52327S and am very pleased with it thus far. 8)
