My usual supply of 24X HP-TY cdrs having dried up, I located what I thought were some more at a local store. They were in a slimline package, but the wording on the label and the top of the CDs were the same,as was the design of the packaging. Got them home, ran Smart-Burn. This is what I got :

Drive Type = DVD DUAL
Disc Type = CDR
Material = Phthalocyanine
Lead In = 97:28:26
Lead Out = 79:59:74
Nominal Capacity = 702.83MB
Manufacturer Maybe = Multi Media Masters & Machinary SA
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 40X (Write)

Can you say :x ? I'm returning these as soon as I can,of course. You guys should be careful.

Yeah, but the older 24X stuff, of which I picked up about 60, are/were TY.
This new fake batch looked exactly like those older 24X TYs, but were Multi Media Masters.

HP disc's 24x disc's could be made by: TY, CMC & MITSUI.
Not 4M since 4M is a companny who sells technology it will be very hard to track down were there comming from and who made this media really.

Yeah, I know. But I'm just MAD to have paid so much for this crap! Heh.. I wouldn't have even minded CMC, but 4M is too much!
RJW, if it says Made In Japan on the 24X HPs, is it guaranteed to be by TY?

You tell us. :) Did the HP/4M discs you got say "Made in Japan" on the label? If they did, then they are really fake/wannabe TY's!

Report this to HP, seriously. They are looking for the distributors of this media. So far, I have been unable to find them myself, but they are also in Canada.

Let HP know where you bought them, and play up how mortified you were, if you're lucky, they may give you a spindle for your trouble.

Yep, they clearly said Made In Japan on the label.
Dolph : I'm going to talk to HP about this, as you said. I'm really MAD, and I hope they do something about it. Are fake HPs a big problem the world over?

As far as I know, only in North America. Expect counterfeit Sony CD-Rs to be appearing next... :o

Now this I can see happening. Let me guess, the counterfeit Sony discs will be manufactured by Lead Data? Or are the two companies somehow connected? I have seen similarities in the appearance of Sony and Lead Data discs.

I don't know who the counterfeit Sony CD-Rs will be made by, but I *REALLY* doubt that Lead Data would do it, since they would probably lose thier contract with Sony then...

The only reason I know about it in the first place is because one of my shadier friends in the CD industry was approached to create said counterfeit discs, and he turned the customer down.

Not in North America I don't think. Remember that we get different stock compared to just about everywhere else in thw world. According to one Plextor tech support guy, we get all the crap media (no joke, this was actually said once).

I think there is some truth in that -- Philips comes down on distributors of some Taiwanese media (some companies are known to dump media, a lot of which because it's reject stock has no royalties paid) like a ton of bricks in Europe -- but seems rather quieter in North America for some reason.
