hi there,

can anyone recommend me a cd writer or probably a cd-rom device, whichever among them has the best reading ability in terms of different cd-r media?

i use to think plextor is the best out there but there are cases in my photolab (digital minilab) where customers submit cd-r that hardly read well by plextor, but read well by lite-on.

i'm thinking that maybe, there's a device that can read most of the cd-r universally, this will be a great help to our operation.

The LiteON 52327S has very good error correction from what I've seen. I think my most error tolerant drive is the LiteON 48125W (I don't have a LiteON 52327S)... do *NOT* get an LG burner, or at least the LG 8525B, it's not that good.

Old TEAC cd writers made by TEAC themselves were nice.
However there newer stuff sucks.

Lite On 52327S better as plextor ? I wouldn't say that.
My old Plextor 24/10/40A seems also to perform better with most damaged media as the lite On normally does. However disc's that fail in one can sometimes be read in the other.
So I won't recommend one over one.

By the way why do I have this feeling that Plextor is going more and more down hill and that the premium's name is only base on:
A it's price !
B The extra options

I've had that opinion for a while... I only bought it for my reviews, I don't actually use it for personal stuff

My Lite-On/JLMS 166S DVD-ROM can read anything I throw at it. The 52327S is also very good, too...and a bit faster.

EDIT: Once minor correction. Neither of those two drives could read one disc I had; it was in pretty bad shape plus the disc was a "sawtooth" shaped disc. But one drive did read it, quickly and perfectly: My Plextor PX-504 - Which is a NEC 1100A drive.

Correction: Partially an NEC-1100A drive. Plextor played with it a little bit before releasing it, it's not 100% NEC anymore.

It's the least error tolerant drive I own (see the list in my signiture). Comparisons were made using CD speed on each drive with the same disc.

I kick it old-school, baby, none of these new 52X drives for me. The older LG's are good, namely the GCE-8240B and GCE-8320B. They'll read anything, even scratched or damaged discs.
