Can you "short" an IDE cable?

Hi, I'm realy sorry for the long post and I hope it's not too hard to read,

I have a LG 24x burner (which I'm about to swap with a 52x Lite-on) and have just started using it again after a while of inactivity, and I have discovered that it is now taking over 2 mins longer to burn a whole disk, (I'm using the same media as always)

The first thing I did was check that DMA was "checked" instead of PIO in device manager, and found that it was on PIO instead, I tried resetting it using all the advice I could find on the boards, including clicking on PIO, then restarting, then DMA, and restarting agin, but this didn't help

I then went into my BIOS and saw that DMA was not enabled, but PIO was, unfortunately when I went to enable DMA and I highlighted the area, in another frame on the right, it said something like, "Windows will not enable DMA if it does not detect an 80 pin shielded cable" and when I clicked and enabled DMA, and moved the cursor away, it wouldn't save, but instead defaulted back to PIO

Now since I have been using the same cables in my drives, I was wondering why Windows can no longer detect my cable? could it be that it's no longer shielded for some reason (not much of an expert on these things) that maybe it's been "shorted" or been damaged somehow? (I haven't done anything in the case)

Something else, I was reading another older post where Dodecahedron mentioned something about him using 40 pin cables for his HD and 80 pin cables for his opticals, why is this? and could this be a problem? I just use whatever cables I have, I don't even know what speed 33, 66, 100 or 133, that they should be

Thanks for any ideas and help :D
Steve

as far as pins in an IDE cable go, i just use all 80 conductor cables

same thing as what you explained as 80 pin

have never had a problem, all my cables are rounded too

in this case:
