CDR confusion...

I have noticed that the 'good' CDR (not DVD-R) media, i.e TY, is getting harder and harder to come by. It used to be ALL Fuji, some Memorex and "Made-in-Japan" Maxell were the kings. Even Verbatim has changed. I've now noticed way more "Made-In-Tawain" Fuji, Maxell, and Verbatim. Verbatim has changed their packaging look entirely and appeared to have dropped the Azo DataLife Plus discs that my Plextor loves? And Made In Tawain doesn't bode well for the media being TY--more likely "inferior" CMC or Ritek.

Can anyone shed any light about who (name brand) is using what now?

Thanks!

P.S. Just waiting for local B&M to get the Plextor 712. It would be nice to have the dual-layer, but they finally added my most-hoped feature: GigaRec. As a DJ I CANNOT do without this amazing technology since 90% of my discs are GR recorded with my current Premium. I have very little issue if I keep speed to 1.2x and disc under 96min.

Well, here's the deal:

Taiyo Yuden has a lot of work to do to keep up with the technology being made by rival Mitsuibishi Chemicals. They still make CD-Rs, but not in the same volumes they used to in the past. Fuji still seems to use Taiyo Yuden for some of their OEM jobs, but also now uses Prodisc.

Mitsubishi has almost entirely stopped making media. They have *1* manufacturing plant, in Singapore. The media they make in Japan is only for R&D and doesn't make it to the consumer market. So who is making all of Mitsubishi's media now? (Since verbatim still has a lot of media coming out)... It's *CMC*!

So what is Mitsubishi doing if not making media? They're the ones making the technology for a lot of other manufacturers, including CMC, Ritek, Optodisc, and most likely Prodisc as well!

So what does this leave us with? a very hard time finding real Mitsubishi or media!! And Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs are getting a little harder now too.

#$@!@, $#@@, %$#@, $#@!$, CRAP!! OK, didn't know that, that freaking sucks the big one :(
Is the stuff in the old-style packaging still the "good" discs? I've had nothing but great burns from 'em, even in my crappy DD0401. But the 52327S is better :)

As CD media I use, 100% TY. Since Fuji TY's are impossible to find anymore (well, my local Meijer has 'em, but $30 for a 30 pack!), I just order TYs online (Rima, Meritline, etc). Don't burn many CDs, though.

Don't worry, CMC is still making Azo discs for the Verbatim brand name... they are just harder to find on a reliable basis... also quality may be an issue, I'm not sure.

CMC quality an issue? Nah, never!

Latest TDK are CMC. I think they only TY ones now are the "Made in Japan" Fujis. I've noticed you can differentiate those by the blue leaflet on the top disc. The made in Tawain (ProDisc/CMC?) don't have that insert.

Before this post, I picked up Verbatims in the new packaging...they are probably CMC too.

Not good.

About Verbatim. We here in Europe are still able to get SuperAZO (made by Mitsubushi) CDRs, but the whole DataLife line is made in India by Moser Baer India Ltd.
