CD-R Burning Freezes CD Drive

Hi,
I'm using Roxio ( preload on Dell ), the combo DVD-CD burner and Memorex Black to burn/copy CDs. The drive is NEC 1100a
Intermittantly, the drives freezes during the burn portion and only burns some of the songs, which are playable.
The only way to get out of it is hard booting. Not even ending the process works. And once booted, and I place the partially burned CD in the drive and right click for properties, the drive freezes again.
Is this because Roxio burns the songs pratically un-compressed and doesnt realize theres not enough room to finish?
Is there a way to determine if it's the drive or software, or does this sound like either one is a problem. I do hear that Roxio is poor, but in what respect? Symptomatic of my problems?
I've had this system for almost two years, and just started to burn CDs with it. I've been burning ( encoding/authoring too ) DVDs successfully.
I originally thought it was something running in the background in XP, but I turned most of that off. And if that was the problem, it most likely would do it more often.
Any help will be appreciated and thank you for your time,
patmac

Have you updated the software to the latest using the patch on the site?

I would recomend Roxio to a new comer. We all here use Nero as it offers total control over the burning process.Nero Express is easy to use variant of Nero which uses the Nero engine.

Pranav81,
Are you refering to a Roxio patch, or one from Dell?
The Dell one for my drive is for being able to use different formats in the drive, doesn't mention anything about lock ups.
Is Nero Express still available? I just need simple CD copying capability ( without problems ). I already have DVD stuff.
Thanks for your time,
patmac

Dear patmac,
Hi.I was referring to the patch on Roxio's site.Does Dell also offer patch for your Roxio burning software? If it does make sure that you use the latest version.
You can try Nero free for a month.See http://www.nero.com for more details. If you like Nero then you can also buy the software online.
