Is my LiteON 52327S dead ?

My Liteon 52327S QS0C suddenly stopped recognizing any media - either blank CDR or pressed CD. After inserting the disk, the yellow light blinks for about 10-15 seconds and then stops. Windows Explorer or any other program (Nero Speed/ROM) cannot read any disk.

Running Liteon SmartBurn software results in the following message:

Drive Type = CD-RW
Disc Type = NO MEDIA

When running Nero Info tool, everything seems fine: drive is recognized, DMA ON, ASPI is OK.
I also have PLextor 1210A writer and that one reads media OK, so it shoudn't be a software issue....

Is there any diagnostic program to tell me if the drive has died (other than SmartBurn) ?

THe drive is about 1.5 - 2 years old. Windows 2000 SP4.
I recently upgraded from Nero 6.3.0.1 to the latest 6.3.1.17 but again, this I think is just a coincedence...

Try the drive in another computer. If you have identical problems in the other computer, then the drive probably is dead. If not, then your problems might just be the result of some sort of software conflict.

ugh, this is what happened to my TDK-rebadged 481248 Lite-On (died in a similar manner shy of a year of use)...I've now been enjoying the 523252S since Sept. of last year (Manuf. July 2003). This may be my last Lite-On cd-burner if this drive doesn't make it beyond 2 years... (I don't think that's much to ask, as my Yamaha has lasted 5).

Try updating the firmware. QS0C is not the latest, QS0E is what I use with great media compatiblity. I truly haven't found a disc it does not write to.

That would be a bit difficult for him because, and I quote:

Code: Select all
My Liteon 52327S QS0C suddenly stopped recognizing any media

The regular LiteOn flasher should still be able to update the drive even if it doesn't recognize discs.

I stand corrected...and you know, I was thinking of this firmware-upgradeable Iriver portable mp3 cd player when I made that comment above. Obviously, cd-rw drives aren't limited in that capacity. :P I apologize for my absent-mindedness. Try what the doc said. ;)

I've updated to the latest QS0E but nothing changed - still doesn't read/write any CDs...blank or pressed

Has anyone had any experience dealing with Liteon customer service (returning/exchanging drives on the warrranty).

It turns out, I bought this drive in Aug 2003 (manufacture date May 2003), so it is apparantly still under warranty.

If the firmware didn't help, than it sounds like the drive is broken. Better hurry up, the one year warranty will be over soon. I don't have any experience dealing with LiteOn for warranty service.
