I know there's a site for DVDs where you can enter a code and get info. on how well the media burns and stuff, but I can't seem to find one for CD-Rs. I know there's software out there that can tell you as well. Or maybe someone knows the answer to my next specific question.

I was just curious. We've been using some Staples 80 min. (700MB) CD-Rs at work and was wondering who makes them? All the codes I can get off the inside of the discs are below:

It's made by CMC... although I could have told you that without the serial numbers too

That CMC stuff is very common in all the stores around me. Not great, but actually ok media.

No, I'm afraid not (AFAIK).

It would take quite a lot of effort to compile such a site (burn each version of each disc with all burners and all firmware and then scan the results).

As such, there is no such site.

The closest that I have found is:


http://www.pcwelt.de/tests/hardware-tests/cd-rohlinge/

They test most discs with three burners for BLER (errors) and also specify max burn speeds on three burners.

Not all conclusive and your drive may differ differently, but it is the best I've seen.

Of course, user forums like cdfreaks are often as good (if not better) in this regard, especially the Media sub-forum:

PS Oh, I forgot: you'll have to use site search tools or just "browsing" to find the the disc. Haven't found one site where you can just pop in the code itself and it brings up the correct disc.

For a start, click on the "English" tab at upper right or use this link directly: http://www.instantinfo.de/index_cdrohlinge_e.php

That should help you on.

Unfortunately, their DVD information (in case you need that) doesn't have an English menu, but you can transfer your CD-experience to that.
