Best sounding disc?

Hello,

I'm a musician and about to get into recording alot of my music onto cd - to sell and for demoes. Naturally, I want to get the best sounding disc that I can for this. I've been given lots of conflicting advice and was wondering if anyone here can clear help straighten it out. I've heard that some are good for music, and others are good for data, that it makes no difference - a good disc is a good disc no matter what you use it for, that 'black' coloured discs sound better even than discs identical in everyway except colour, that Taiyo Yuden are the best regardless of application, that TY are no longer as good as they were etc. etc. Any advice very welcome. Thanks.

I still think TY and MCC are the best, the mediaphiles say Mitsui is but I've never tried them.
The differance is how they're burned and stored:
1.Start with high quality media.
2.Burn at <24x with a reliable writer.
3.Store away from heat, moisture and sunlight.

If you're going to make hundreds or thousands of discs have it done professionally because they will 'press' the disc and put a nice logo on it.

I will be doing lots of cds, but they won't all necessarily be the same, and I'll probably add and delete tracks as I come up with new ones, so burning them myself is the best way to go, I think. Thanks for the help.

p.s. TY I get, but what's MMC short for? (you can probably tell I'm pretty new to this!)

Mitsubishi Chemical Company

Slim
Who notes that this is not to be confused with CDs made by CMC.

And if you can't find any MCC discs, try looking for the Verbatim DataLifePlus brand. They are made by Mitsubishi.

Avoid burning multisession CD Audio discs, because players usually recognize only the last session...

Burn at 16x max (8x is safer) in Disc-At-Once mode and Finalize CD.

FujiFilm CD-R discs packed in slimcases are very good. - Hmm, NOT!!*

*Edit: I have to confess that FujiFilm disappointed me last week. My Nakamichi car CD player sometimes couldn't start the first track, then there were many skipings forth and back on the same track. The same album, recorded on LG (Plasmon) or Taiyo Yuden disc, plays flawless anywhere!

I might be wrong but the idea that one cdr will sound better than another is certainly a concept that is very new to me. I am also a musician as are my friends and I have never noticed any difference in the sound of a digital soundfile because of the media that was used to record it. None of my friends have ever remarked on such a phenomenon either. I do not think that the media CAN effect the sound, really. There might be a difference in the number of errors the recorder makes while burning the disk, and enough errors will effect the playback of the disk but it will not change the sound of the recorded material; it would just cause problems such as skips and unreadable sectors, and similiar glitches, but the sound of the good sectors should not change at all from one brand of cdr to another.

yeah, if there is clipping and popping all over the disc it won't be "best sounding" right?

Some brands are pretty bad, they have so much error until the playback is affected.
Generally, If the CD reader can read the disc without error, then it will be "best sounding" no matter what brand it is

some brand are just better than others, less errors, good compability with readers etc

About sounding and couloured bottoms.
There are 2 good things about black disc's 1 - UV protection is better.
2 - The jitter will be slightly lower on poor cdplayer with bad focusseing. Which in the end leads to better sound. - This will also solve some playback issues that are on some players.

So should I recommend black disc's then ?
No !!!

Black disc's are most times made by less good manufacturers. (except maybe the new FUJI's ?)
Which manufacture less good and are worse supported which means more errors/ higher jitter in the end product.

For this reason I would recommend a disc which has very good support and is very good manufactured.

1 Taiyo Yuden
2 Mitsubishi
3 Quantagey(MITSUI manufactureing technology)/MAM-A/E PRO STUDIO(MITSUI manufactureing technology), MAM-A/E
speciall audio silver disc. (MITSUI manufactureing technology)

The silver disc of MAM has the advantage that it will play on some players which require very high reflectivity. ) The gold ones should however last long less change on metal corrosion. However MAM also needs this because there disc's are not as well manufacturerd as TY.

Mitsubishi old Metal AZO media seems to be able to solve the same over reflection problem that Black disc's can however I said Metal AZO not Super AZO which is the newer version. Metal AZO these days is hardly made by MCC and partners and the vinyl ones are not a real option.
(Thanks to the fact that the vinyl version seems to be unbalanced.) So if you really want to use MCC because of playback compatability then search for the old media which will be hard. Ohyeah do not use Lite On burners incombination with MCC Metal AZO, because it seems that Lite On screwed up the writeing strategy resulting in poor quality on some batches that will burn excellent on other drives (read plextor, Yamaha, Pioneer )

Taiyo Yuden is probally the most cheap, most easy, best supported (meaning best burnquality overall) and best manufactured sollutionStill on some problematic players MCC/Mitsui disc's might work while TY won't.

My personall choice would be to go for Taiyo Yuden..

About FUJI. Han If you mean FUJI germanny then I have to say there good media however some drives poorly support them while others work very good with them. My Lite On 52327S burns my FUJIs better as TY on speeds higher as 12x lower you don't see any differences. However on some other drives they seem to be much less good.

About plasmon manufactured stuff. The real manufacturer depends the end quality While I would say AOD is nice I have seen some other manufacturers usseing Plasmon technology to make horrible disc's.
