Why are my drives hanging? NEC1100A replaced with Teac W58E.

Hey guys, sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section. My DVD burner is having some major problems and I'm running out of places to turn to.

After hundreds of successful burns, my NEC 1100A started giving me buffer underrun burn failures (using Nero 5.5). Dell replaced it with a Teac W58E. The burn begins well, but somewhere past 50% it slows down dramatically, eventually hanging around 75%. Meanwhile, the drive is spinning hard, slowing down, and spinning back up again. Nero does NOT report a burn failure. Even after quitting Nero, the drive is still spinning hard and I cannot eject the disc.

I've updates Nero, switched the IDE plugs and power source, defragmented PC, disabled most everything from startup, ran Spyware + Adaware, ran Norton Antivirus + Trendmicro. The drive also hangs with Easy CD creator, so it's not a Nero thing. I have a P4 3.06 with 528ram, 55 gigs free.

Did Dell send me a busted drive? Any help will be appreciated.

Have you tried different media?

I will try that today. I know it's one of the first things I should try. Not many people have a Teac W58E, so it's hard to know what media is most compatible. I've been using Sony 700mb CD-Rs, which worked fine in the NEC 1100A (and are rated up to 48x, but I know that is bs).

Wow, man. Thanks for the suggestion, Justin42. You have no idea how much time I've wasted with this issue. This TEAC drive sure loves Taio Yudens (who doesn't?)

And I'll state the obvious: steer clear of Sony CD-Rs if you own a TEAC W58E.
