Why is writing software sooo expensive??

Used to be you bought a CD-R drive and you got some sort of software to do the process. Now you get nothing. I just bought a Toshiba SDR-1612. Not into burning DVDs yet, but still have the need for CD-R/RW's and watching movies on the PC. I don't really care too much for MS Media Player., but I didn't even get a CD with Nero Express or somthing like it.
So I look to Neros website and GEE there it is, Nero 6.6 for $99.99. Twice what I paid for the drive. I don't have that kind of money to spent on a single piece of software, that will need to be upgraded in 6 months.
What happened to cheap, good software. Or a Nero retail just for burning
CD's

There are free programs and lower cost. They won't have the functionality of Nero or Roxio. Do a google.

Most drives do come with at least basic software. I guess you bought an OEM drive instead of retail version? Some OEM drives come with software, but not all. You really have to watch when buying OEM stuff. Sometimes you get the same as retail without the fancy box and sometimes you only get the raw component without anything else.

There is software less buggy and cheaper than Nero, like cdrtools and dvddecrypter ;) The only difference is that you don't have all in one software (and less bugs...)

Would you like to earn $100,000 per year. Try writing some software yourself then imagine earning that much.

Programmers don't work at minimum wage.

Judging from what they are doing at Ahead, some seem to or are overpaid

I have seen some Nero 5.5 and 6.0 listed for sale but I believe they are OEM and not retail. I have seen CloneCD at $40. Way to much for such a simple program. Why doesn't Nero offer a less than package, for those of us that only need to work with CD and not DVDs?

Also thanks for the input.
Sorry Slim, maybe my title is misleading. I wasn't refering to the act of writing but the process of writing to a CD-R/RW Dive by software.
HUH!

Oh, weetoots, you misunderstood me also, I was replying to alexnoe, as it was immediately above my post. Should have used quote.

But I think that programmer competency, Ahead or elsewhere, is relative. Go to Fry's and get your computer repaired. Consider yourself lucky if you don't have a goback on your car if you have a mechanic try anything beyond an oil change.

True, but if you want to sell something, it should be better than what you can get for free. In the case of Nero, this is far from being the case.
